Thoughts from the CEO
The Dash
This pandemic has been horrific for everyone, and while nearly 98 percent of those who get COVID will recover, there are
those (mostly high-risk) people for whom this disease will be life-threatening. My family recently had an encounter with the
virus. My father-in-law initially tested positive, so we all got tested. My wife, son, and I were also positive. We had been particularly careful because I had undergone treatment for cancer in the past year, but we were struck with the virus anyway. Fortunately, I had only a mild to moderate case and recovered quickly. My wife, however, who is not high-risk and in good health,
developed COVID pneumonia and spent a week in the hospital. Thankfully, she is recovering well. Our son was essentially asymptomatic. My mother-in-law initially tested negative but then tested positive. Unfortunately, both my father-in-law (86) and
mother-in-law (81) ended up hospitalized, and they passed away in the hospital a week apart.
At the funeral for my mother-in-law, our minister talked about how we celebrate the lives of those we remember at these services. He talked about the grave marker and how it relates the day we are born and the day we die, and between those dates on
the marker is a " dash. " The dash, he noted, is what is important, as it represents how we lived our lives. At the service, we were
really celebrating my mother-in-law's dash-all the events that made up her life and the memories we had of our time with her.
The minister pointed out that during this celebration of a loved one's life, we had an opportunity to reflect on our own " dash. "
As we come to the conclusion of 2020 and what has been a very difficult year for everyone, and as we prepare to start a new
year that will hopefully see an end to this pandemic and better and more normal times for all, there is an opportunity for us all
to reflect on our dash. Are we living our personal and professional lives in a manner that would make us happy with our dash?
If not, what can we do to improve? Live life so that when the time comes for your loved ones to reflect upon your dash, it will
be one that can be celebrated.
