Advocacy: What It Means to Me
Advocacy can be defined as an activity by an individual or
group to plead a case, support a cause, or recommend a course
of action related to political, economic, social, institutional, or
patient-care issues. APMAPAC is one of the mechanisms by
which you are professionally represented in the many spaces
that affect your daily practice and care of your patients.
In the years since I became involved in our profession's advocacy efforts, the importance of having a voice with federal
policymakers has increased significantly; however, financial
support for our collective political efforts has declined at a
time when participation in political activities around the nation is rising.
The APMAPAC board has heard the disdain from members for a political process that is acrimonious, resulting in
a sense of waste and lack of forward motion. Then add on
examples of extreme partisanship, and it's no wonder that
more than 80 percent of podiatrists do not participate in
our advocacy efforts.
Our profession is too small to be divided by partisanship.
Census data show podiatry to be a small cohort (18,000)
compared to MDs (950,000); DOs (145,000); dentists
(200,000); physical therapists (258,000); and nurse practitioners (290,000).
Looking at these numbers, it's clear how easily podiatry's
priorities can be subjugated by those of other health-care
professionals.
As individual DPMs, we survive day by day using our training and skills, but it's the impact of larger forces that determines our profession's fate. Without a collective effort by the
majority of our members, the likelihood of individual success
and survival is diminished.
APMAPAC plays a key role in legislative advocacy, and your
financial support will increase our collective success and survival. APMAPAC encourages members to make meaningful
contributions, and we want to amplify this message in 2021.
