Des Moines University College of
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery
Welcomes New Dean
Kevin Smith, DPM, PhD, MS, has been named the new
dean of Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. A 1995 graduate of the college, Dr. Smith
will assume his new position on June 1. He currently
serves as a professor and associate dean for clinical affairs
as well as a podiatric physician in the DMU Clinic Foot
and Ankle. As dean, Dr. Smith will lead the process of assessing the college's opportunities for innovation and
growth and help drive positive changes to both the academic programming and research within the college and
services offered by the DMU Clinic Foot and Ankle.
" Dr. Smith has demonstrated leadership by embracing
our new virtual platforms permitting the smooth continuity of college operations including lectures, journal clubs
and grand rounds, simulations, and advising for our students, " said DMU Provost Ralitsa Akins, MD, PhD, in announcing the appointment.
Dr. Smith joined the faculty in 1998 after working in
private practice in New Jersey. Board-certified in foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery, he is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons
and a diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle
Surgery. Dr. Smith has frequently published and presented
on aspects of medical education, including cultural competency program assessment, clinical evaluation of podiat-

ric medical students and interprofessional learning, as well
as on podiatric medical procedures. He has received
awards at DMU for clinical teaching, faculty service, and
scholarship. He also was honored with the William J.
Stickel Gold Award, the highest honor given for a research
publication by the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Ross Appointed to Advisory Council
Jeffrey A. Ross, DPM, MD, associate professor of Surgery in
the division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Baylor College of Medicine, has been appointed to the
advisory council of the College of Health Sciences at the
University of Rhode Island. Dr. Ross was appointed by the
dean of the college, Gary Liguori, PhD. Dr. Ross will serve
in an advisory capacity for a three-year term.
The College of Health Sciences at the University of
Rhode Island includes the following disciplines: psychology, kinesiology, human development and family science,
communicative disorders, health studies, nutrition and
food science, physical therapy, and neuroscience.
Dr. Ross is collaborating with Dean Liguori and Bijan
Najafi, PhD, MSc (Baylor College of Medicine/Consortium
on Advanced Motion Performance) on topics involving
gait, patients with Alzheimer's disease, diabetic foot pressure and monitoring, and remote shoe inserts and insoles.
Dr. Ross graduated from the University of Rhode Island
with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology (pre-med) in 1975.
