Member at a Time
This is my final message to you, my APMA colleagues, as your
president. Along with APMA staff, the Board of Trustees has made
it a goal to demonstrate that each and every APMA member
makes a difference, and each and every member is valued. We
hope that we have been able to bring members closer to their association
and create a sense of community despite the challenges
that have continued over the past year.
I have taken the opportunity to visit state components that
have not been visited in recent years by a member of the APMA
Board of Trustees. When I visited components like the Mississippi
Podiatric Medical Association or the Puerto Rico Podiatric
Medical Association, I was privileged to hear from members
there about the issues that matter to them-and to share with
them how APMA is always defending their interests. Whether
it's working on a widespread reimbursement issue, an individual
hospital credentialing challenge, or a problem that affects podiatric
surgeons within the Veterans Health Administration, APMA is
here for you, our members. Here's a sample of just a few of the
individual members we've been able to protect this year:
Throughout 2020, APMA staff worked with a group of podiatric
surgeons in Oregon who were excluded from taking trauma call
at their hospital. In January 2021, the hospital changed its policy
to allow DPMs to take call and be compensated! APMA continues
to work with members to ensure the policy is fully realized.
APMA worked with a South Dakota podiatric physician when
TRICARE HealthNet Federal Services was not permitting DPMs to
order noninvasive vascular or arterial studies for TRICARE beneficiaries.
After several calls and meetings HealthNet changed its
policy, and DPMs can now order these services.
Our MIPS team takes daily calls from members who need help
navigating the requirements of the Quality Payment Program. In
fact, the staff who handle MIPS calls have become such go-to
resources for members that many members call them with other,
non-MIPS-related requests.
In closing, I hope each of you realizes that APMA recognizes
and defends you as a physician within our specialty of medicine.
It has been my honor to serve each and every one of you as
your APMA president.
