1. When you were a kid, what did
you want to be when you grew up?
An astronaut. I grew up in the era of the Mercury,
Gemini, and Apollo space programs and marveled
at the pictures in Life magazine. Once I
realized the training involved things that were
essentially rollercoasters on steroids, I quickly
gave that up.
2. What do you do for fun during
your time off?
I try to enjoy playing golf. I play rather poorly, so
the key word is " try, " but if I am playing golf with
my son, it is always fun. I now also get immense
pleasure spending time with my first grandchild, a
beautiful baby girl.
3. If you could meet any famous
person, who would it be?
I would love to spend time with Bruce
Springsteen. I bought my first rock album, " Born
to Run, " in October 1975 and wore it out on my
record player. Over the past 50 years, his songs
have been the soundtrack of my life.
4. Why is podiatry the best career
for you?
Because every day, I still find pleasure in what I do.
It is so rewarding to relieve someone of their pain,
because as every patient has told every podiatrist,
" When your feet hurt, you hurt all over. " Being able
get people back to enjoying their lives and work
and not having to be in pain with each step is
incredibly rewarding.
5. Who's the most memorable
professor you've ever had, and why?
Both Harold Schoenhaus, DPM, and Richard Jay,
DPM, at the then-Pennsylvania College of Podiatric
Medicine. I found their classes enlightening and
enjoyable. They showed me that you can be a

well-rounded physician and not pigeonhole yourself
into any one area of practice.
6. What's the best meal you've
ever had?
A truly memorable meal was with my wife in New
Orleans at Emeril Lagasse's restaurant " Nola. " My
appetizer was a delicious shrimp and grits dish with
sweet potatoes with butter and cinnamon on top.
7. Where would you go if you could
visit anywhere in the world?
Because I am still eight years old at heart, I will
never, ever say no to going to DisneyWorld.
8. What are some " soft skills " that
are important for medical professionals
to have?
I think some of the best skills a physician can have
come from being a patient. When I was an extern, I
was taught several important lessons: Always
remember that there is a person attached to the
other end of that foot. I try not to take myself too
seriously and always do my best to make my
patients feel at ease. I don't treat feet; I treat people
with foot problems.
9. What mistake have you made that
taught you a great lesson?
I try not to dwell on mistakes that I have made
because looking backward does not allow you to
move forward. I try to continuously learn from
both my colleagues and my patients every day.
Every patient interaction is a learning experience.
10. What is your favorite movie?
One of the most memorable movie experiences
had to be when I saw Marvel's " Avengers
Endgame " the day it came out in 2019. I was in
New York in a theater full of other Marvel nerds
like me.
