Spiro Mounds State Archaeological Park,
Spiro, OK (Allyear, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; excavations tentatively scheduled June 15August 5, 1983). Elaborateand abundant
burial goods, some of which are on view,
point to the importance of this major ceremonialmound center duringthe Woodland
and Mississippianperiods (A.D.700-1350).
The 138-acre park includes reconstructed
mounds and houses and interpretivepaths
windingthroughthe numerousmounds and
ceremonialareas.On-sitemuseum.The Kerr
Museum in Poteau is nearby; state and
federal parks, reservoirs and lakes in the
area offera fullrange of recreationalfacilities.

ALABAMA
Fort Toulouse-Jackson Park, Wetumpka,
AL (April 1-October 31, 1983; 6 a.m.9 p.m.; November 1-March 31, 1984; 8
a.m.-5 p.m.). FortJacksonmarksa strategic
area at the confluence of the Coosa and
Tallapoosarivers.Itwas an importantcenter
during the Mississippianperiod; the nearby
Hickory Ground also served as a Creek
Indiancapital.In 1717the Frenchestablished
an outpost there, as did the Americans in
1814. The fort area has been partially
reconstructed;also on the grounds are an
Indianmound, the WilliamBartramArboretum and a VisitorsCenterwithartifactdisplay.
The park has improvedcampingfacilities,a
boat launch and a picnic pavilion.Historic
Montgomery, the Montgomery Zoo and
Jasmine Hill Gardens are nearby. Getting

Crystal River,FL(Allyear). The Precolumbian mound builders of Florida created
ceremonial, burial and midden mounds
datingfrom200B.C.to A.D.1400 on thissite.
The mounds have been partiallyexcavated;

Fatio Site, St. Augustine, FL(Excavations
planned for 1983). Excavationshave been
conducted annuallysince 1979 at the Fatio
Site, a 19th-centurytourist home. Archaeologistsplan to restore the buildingand its
gardens to its appearance in 1850. The lot
was occupied continuallysince about 1570,
and excavationshave revealed evidence of
buildings,wells,trash pits,and kitchenareas
from Spanish occupation of St. Augustine
(16th-18thcenturies).One of the earliestfinds
is part of a 16th-centurywattle-and-daub
house, which may be one of the oldest
European structures in North America.
Historic St. Augustine, of which the Fatio
Site is part, contains 20 restored or reconstructed Colonial buildings from the 18th
and 19th centuries. An on-site museum
(open daily, 9 a.m.-5:15 p.m.) displays
Spanish artifacts and fine and decorative

Indian Key State Historic Site, FL (All
year). This 1-acreislandin the FloridaKeys
wasthe main outpost betweenSt. Augustine
and KeyWestfrom 1820-40. Itwas a center
for the wreckingindustryand shipbuilding,
and wasburned in an 1840 Indianmassacre.

Lake Jackson Mounds State Archaeological Site, Tallahassee, FL (All year). Lake
Jackson Mounds, the largest ceremonial
temple mound complex in north Florida,
was occupied by Apalachee Indians from
A.D.1200-1500. Getting there: The site is
located on CrowderRoad, 2 milesnorth of
Interstate10on U.S.27, northof Tallahassee;

Temple Mound Museum and Park, Fort
Walton Beach, FL (Allyear). Thisrestored
earthen temple mound datingto about 100
B.C.was used for defense during the Civil
War in 1861. On-site museum open Tuesday-Saturday,11 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday, 1-4
p.m. Interpretiveexhibitsdepictsoutheastern
Indian life over a span of 10,000 years.
