The past few years with ASHA have
been a roller-coaster ride for me. In
2018, my first year of serving as chair of
the Audiology Advisory Council (AAC)
and as a member of the ASHA Board of
Directors (BOD), I became familiar with
the ASHA governance review process.
ASHA experienced a major change in
governance structure about 13 years
ago. This involved the sunsetting of the
Legislative Council and the creation of
a Board of Directors with two Advisory
Councils (ACs), one for audiology (the
AAC) and one for speech-language
pathology (the SLPAC).
Over the years, the ACs became
more focused on advocacy than on
advising the BOD. Every year, the ACs
held a spring meeting, during which
time they spent a day on Capitol Hill
in Washington, D.C., meeting with
congressional leaders and advocating
for our professions and the patients we
serve.
The ASHA BOD voted for the ACs to
sunset due to a mismatch between the
original roles of the ACs as described
in the bylaws and the actual roles of
the ACs, as they had evolved. Sunsetting the ACs allowed ASHA to form
a new body focused on advocacy,
which we now call the Committee of
Ambassadors (CoA). This committee
has the same makeup as the ACs, with
the same number of audiologists and
speech-language pathologists from
every state. In fact, the current AC members were given the option to " roll over "
their terms to the new CoA. Although
the formation of the CoA took years
and lots of hard work-and, yes, some
confusion and frustration-to come into
being, I believe that the CoA is now
serving a very important role for the
Association. It is a group of audiologists

and speech-language pathologists from
across the country who are trained and
focused on the work of advocacy, both in
their home states and territories as well as
on the federal level. It is important to note,
however, that advocacy is not just an
action of persuading legislators. Advocacy also involves proactively informing
the public and other professionals about
the important work we are doing. It is
the recruitment of other audiologists and
speech-language pathologists into an
alliance focused on moving our professions forward and ultimately improving
the care of our patients. I am so proud
to have been a part of this important
change in our Association.

ARLENE CARNEY
As I write this, I am coming to the end of
my term as the Vice President for Standards and Ethics in Audiology and it has
gone by in a flash. For 3 years, I have
contemplated our foundations and our
future, while being privileged to work with
ASHA volunteers and ASHA staff. We
established new programs such as the
ASHA Assistants Program, which provides
a pathway to certification for audiology
and speech-language pathology assistants, and the ASHA Learning Pass, which
offers a broad range of continuing education opportunities.
I have seen the Board of Ethics generate a Code of Conduct for audiology and
speech-language-pathology assistants
that parallels the ASHA Code of Ethics-a
set of shared principles that we need
to reflect on regularly. Issues in Ethics
articles-as well as columns in The ASHA
Leader such as " Everyday Ethics " -can
help us keep in touch with our ethical
foundations.
The certification standards in audiology
are living documents that reflect how far
our profession has come. They outline
