 AUDIOLOGY BOARD OF DIRECTORS CORNER

in detail what the entry-level audiology
practitioner must know and be able to
do in the context of the profession today.
We updated the Audiology Certification
Standards in 2020. The new certification
standards and national examination
for audiology assistants will allow us to
recognize a new group of health care
workers. Audiology assistants will free
up audiologists to practice at " the top of
their license. " ASHA's Vice President for
Audiology Practice is working with an
ad hoc committee to write a Scope of
Practice for audiology assistants.
As audiologists, we need continuing
education to maintain our certification
at a minimum; as dedicated professionals, we need continuing education to
sustain lifelong learning and expand
our knowledge base all the time. I am
happy to report that I earned an Award
for Continuing Education (ACE) this year
for obtaining at least seven continuing
education units (CEUs) in a 3-year period. I was inspired by the ASHA Continuing Education Board and the ASHA
Scientific and Professional Education
Board to be the best version of me that
I could be.
Foundational changes are sometimes
behind the scenes for members as they
cope with the realities of practicing
during a pandemic and the exceptional
challenges that it presents. My work with
ASHA has given me an even deeper
respect for our audiology foundations.
These foundations support our every
move forward, even when we are not
necessarily aware of that forward movement. I will miss the direct contact with
ASHA boards and councils that make
these foundations possible. I know that
the important work will continue and will
lead the profession in new directions,
all to benefit our members-and, more
important, the clients/patients/students
we serve.

JULIE HONAKER
I joined the ASHA Board of Directors
January 2020. In my role, I serve as

the board liaison to the Council of
Academic Programs in Communication
Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) and
to the ASHA standing committee-the
Academic Affairs Board (AAB). Given
COVID-19, many discussions and planning activities in the area of academic
affairs are now focused on the topic
of online teaching and ensuring that
members have all necessary resources
available to help facilitate learning in
these uncertain and ever-changing
times. As an educator, I, too, am juggling synchronous and asynchronous
teaching. Audiology educators may
refer to ASHA COVID-19 Resources,
including Resources for the Academic
Community and CAPCSD COVID-19
Resources for ongoing assistance.
Although I was not part of the initial
planning, I had the pleasure of learning
about and participating in discussions
related to the ASHA-sponsored CSD
Science Teaching Symposium. The aim
of this symposium is to transform CSD
teaching of science by assembling
faculty to exchange knowledge about
undergraduate CSD science courses.
The AAB postponed the 2020 Teaching
Symposium until 2021, which will follow
an online format. It is our hope that the
symposium will highlight the many innovations in online teaching and ways to
achieve effective teaching even in these
different contexts.
The other major theme this year was
related to racism, discrimination, and
microaggressions. I and other ASHA
BOD members participated in listening
sessions and member forums. We are
hopeful about the next steps that our
Association can and will take to impact
change. I am very proud of the work
that ASHA is committing to this effort.

SHARON SANDRIDGE
It seems like it was just yesterday that I
was gearing up to join the ASHA Board
of Directors as Vice President of Audiology Practices. It has been 2 years,

and I am now gearing up to enter my
final year in this role. It has been a ride,
and might I say-never a dull moment!
The first year was a big learning curve,
and just as I was getting the hang of
everything, COVID-19 hit-changing the
game.
In my role on the ASHA Board of
Directors, I have had great opportunities, even with COVID-19 restrictions. It
is surprising that what I have enjoyed
the most is something I had initially
avoided. I resisted getting involved in
ASHA at the national level until recently
because I always felt that I was not
" political " and shied away from advocating. I found out that I love advocacy!
Working with ASHA Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy Jeff Regan and his incredible team to promote
and advance the audiology profession
has been nothing short of phenomenal.
I have had the opportunity to participate in a number of briefings on Capitol
Hill, including a virtual briefing. I have
loved meeting the staffers, and even
one of the members of Congress, and
delivering our messages with heartfelt
passion so that they understand what is
important to our patients, our consumers, and our profession. I came into
this position with great goals to move
our profession forward-and although
those goals are still critically important, I
have added the goal of trying to excite
audiologists to get out there-to have
a voice and to use their voice. Imagine
if all audiologists who are members of
ASHA, and even those who are not,
contacted their representatives! What
an impact that would have on moving forward the Medicare Audiologist
Access and Services Act that will grant
audiologists practitioner status-which in
turn will reimburse us for management
and treatment services, and remove the
requirement for physician referrals. It is
an exciting time for audiology, and you
can make it even more exciting by advocating for our profession! Get excited
with me about advocacy!
