AUDIOLOGY BOARD OF DIRECTORS CORNER

At the start of my audiology career, I
quickly learned the value of volunteering
with communication sciences and
disorders (CSD) professional associations.
Not only did this provide me a
way to give back to the professions,
but it also gave me the opportunity
for lifelong learning, to advocate for
the profession of audiology, and to
establish professional connections
that would last an entire career. Since
the beginning of 2021, I have had the
privilege of serving as Vice President
for Standards and Ethics in Audiology
on the ASHA Board of Directors
(BOD). Despite the challenge of a pandemic,
I have learned and continue
to acquire knowledge about ASHA's
governance process and those of the
committees, boards, and councils with
which I liaise on behalf of the BOD.
During the past several months, I
have become familiar with the specific
roles that a board liaison plays with
each assigned committee, council,
and board. For the Board of Ethics,
I provide a report and summary of
discussions and decisions made at
previous BOD meetings. Although I
was not involved in discussions related
to the recent addition of an Assistant's
Code of Conduct, the importance of
periodic review of the ASHA Code of
Ethics' rules and principles in relation
to our daily activities has been reinforced.
ASHA provides many resources
on ethics-including webinars that
may be used to meet the Council for
Clinical Certification in Audiology and
Speech-Language Pathology's (CFCC)
2020 CFCC Audiology Certification
Standards requirement of earning 1
certification maintenance hour in ethics
during every 3-year certification maintenance
interval. More recently, the
CFCC approved a revision to the 2020
Audiology Certification Standards that
permits up to 50% of one's supervised
clinical practicum to be completed

through telepractice by the supervising
certified audiologist.
ASHA's longstanding commitment
to enriching the professions through
diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is
not only one of ASHA's core values but
a Strategic Objective (SO8) of ASHA's
Strategic Pathway to Excellence that
is addressed by all ASHA boards,
committees, and councils. As a liaison
to the Scientific Professional Education
Board (SPEB), I reviewed a newly
developed ASHA Professional Development
(APD) micro course series on Taking
Action Against Microaggressions
and participated in discussions on
the efficacy of 30-minute professional
development courses. This series and
other excellent APD courses provide
audiologists with the tools needed to
foster a positive work environment,
enable effective practice, and meet
newly revised CFCC changes to both
the audiology and speech-language
pathology standards, beginning with
the 2023-2025 certification maintenance
interval. The new requirement
states that at least 2 of the 30 hours
of professional development must

be completed in the areas of cultural
competency, cultural humility, culturally
responsive practice, and/or DEI.
ASHA's Future of Learning is a new
initiative that will impact ASHA's broader
learning ecosystem of professional
development offerings and the work
of several committees, committees,
boards, and councils, including those
with which I liaise, the CFCC, the
Continuing Education Board (CEB),
and the SPEB. The purpose of the new
Strategic Objective (SO9) of ASHA's
Strategic Pathway to Excellence is to
reframe and reimagine learning across
the profession and Association. Before
joining the BOD, my ASHA volunteer
activities included participating in the
2019 Future of Learning generative
event. The outcomes related to SO9
will benefit all audiology students and
professionals. As a board member and
an audiologist, I am proud to have the
opportunity to participate in discussions
with ASHA committees, boards,
and councils to achieve ASHA's desired
characteristics for a new learning culture
and ecosystem.
