Why and How to Volunteer With ASHA

for various ASHA programs. For
more information, please contact
audiology@asha.org. There are
many other ways to contribute to the
profession, and ASHA encourages
members to volunteer at the local
and state level. Our partner state
associations need your energy and
leadership, and they often have
opportunities that ASHA does not.
This can be a great pathway to
getting more involved with ASHA and
beginning your leadership journey.
Today, more than ever, you can
We live in challenging times. With so
much change and uncertainty, ASHA
has weathered this storm with you, our
members. ASHA's mission continues,
and we are unable to complete that
mission without volunteers.
There are many benefits to
volunteering for ASHA-networking
with fellow members and making
connections, developing technical
and/or leadership skills, and creating
additional opportunities for yourself
within your career. Unfortunately, for
" traditional " volunteer opportunities
like serving on an ASHA committee,
board, or council, ASHA receives many
more candidates than it has open
positions. In fact, ASHA's current ratio
of committee pool applicants to open
committee positions is 15:1.
Although the committee pool does
have many members, the Committee

on Committees (CoC) seeks diversity,
equity, and inclusion when making
appointments and would like to see a
diversified pool of qualified candidates
from various demographic groups-
including audiology clinical providers,
school-based providers, researchers,
and academicians with varying years
of service in the profession. ASHA
encourages audiologists to submit an
application to serve on committees at

Become-a-Volunteer/. When making
selections, the CoC considers a
volunteer's background, experience,
committees of interest, and the
requirements of the vacancy.
Many " microvolunteering'
opportunities exist for audiologists,
too. These opportunities can include
serving on a member advisory group,
serving on an ASHA Special Interest
