What do you love most about being an audiologist?
The most rewarding part of being an audiologist is making a connection
with patients and their families. I'm a pediatric audiologist, so I'm rarely just
providing care for the patient. The caregivers and family need to be involved
to develop the roadmap for success for each child. Since the definition of
success wildly varies for families, I enjoy the journey of helping them realize
their goals.

How do ASHA Professional Development courses help
you make a difference and better serve your clients?
Many parents and caregivers who are struggling with a recent diagnosis of
hearing loss for their child often ask, "Why? What caused the hearing loss?"
The genetics-themed ASHA Professional Development course* offered a few
years ago was a game changer [for me] for counseling families. Some families
crave information in order to make sense of a hearing loss diagnosis, and the
ASHA Professional Development course provided current and relevant research
to pass along to families. An informed family is more likely to obtain genetic
testing, and our body of knowledge grows when families make that choice.
I appreciate ASHA Professional Development courses for the flexibility of their
design, for the comprehensive evidence-based research provided, and for the
amount of [ASHA] CEUs that can be obtained on my own time.

What do you love to do during your spare time?
My favorite activity is spending time with my almost 2-year-old son, Sam.
You can't keep a busy toddler inside all day, so he has helped me become a
more "outdoorsy" person, and I love it!

How do you maintain work-life balance?
I find I am more successful when I set small, reasonable, daily goals for
work and personal days. The small victories are springboards for tackling
bigger challenges.
