Emphasis was placed on the performance of the primary air-handling units and ventilation strategies. Innovation. Both a dedicated system and a centralized system were used. Operation and Maintenance. A centralized building automation system links all mechanical components through a centralized DDC network. Cost Effectiveness. Capital costs were controlled by providing simple systems that rely on well established low-cost technologies and by optimizing equipment selection. Environmental Impact. To prevent major modifications of the site, the building was designed to fit the surrounding area. Natural ventilation is used, where possible, resulting in a reduction of 212 tons (192 Mg) of CO2 emissions per year. A sixth air handler was added to gain energy efficiency and reliability, and reduce maintenance costs. Indoor Air Quality. All air handlers are provided with 95% efficiency final filters. Innovation. Extension of the heat recovery system by incorporating another heat exchanger into the run-around heat recovery system associated with the 100% outside air supply/exhaust units. Operation and Maintenance. The addition of the sixth airhandling unit allows maintenance of each unit one at a time. Cost Effectiveness. Energy simulations were provided and numerous HVAC system strategies were evaluated to find the optimal system performance. Environmental Impact. Reduction in CO2 emissions and the new chiller plant uses R-134a with zero ozone depletion potential. 62 ASHRAE Journal Energy Efficiency. Several measures were implemented on both VA-1 and VA-2 ventilation systems, as well as on the different hydraulic systems. Indoor Air Quality. 7,500 cfm (3,540 L/s) of fresh air is introduced during occupied periods, supplying more than double the required fresh airflow. Innovation. The energy required to entirely heat the system’s hot decks can be provided by heat recovery from cold rooms and growth chambers and condensers. Operation and Maintenance. New VFDs added on the supply fans will reduce belt and fan wear resulting in smoother start-ups and less maintenance. Cost Effectiveness. Total energy savings was $65,428 for the year, with a net payback of 1.9 years. Environmental Impact. The reduction in steam consumption resulted in a reduction of 193 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Jonathan M. The LEED-required energy model indicates a 35.2% energy savings over an identical building designed to ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999. Indoor Air Quality. Pollutants are monitored in vehicle storage, maintenance, shop and administrative areas. Innovation. Demand-based control for ventilation was used to reduce airflows in the vehicle space to save energy. Operation and Maintenance. Electric resistance heating coils were used for heating.
