these with:
• Asset Management. (racks, servers, network appliance,
client use). Traditional IT function managed with spreadsheets;
• Capacity Planning and Deployment Simulation.Analysis
of power and cooling capacity and options for upgrades, moves,
and expansion;
• Control and Optimization.Using integrated environmental, HVAC and IT data to control servers and/or HVAC more
efficiently;
• Integration.Typically, the collection of data from servers,
power devices and environmental sensors using open protocols
(Modbus, BACnet®, SNMP, etc.); and
• Monitoring and Visualization. Floor plans, equipment
and environmental monitoring via integration and/or wireless
sensors). Table 1 indicates a representative approach of DCIM.
The goal of effective capacity planning is to “right size” throughout the life of the data center including deferring expenditures
as much as practical while still being able to effortlessly accommodate the invariable adds, moves and changes that will occur.

ITSM is a service offered by many IT companies. The service is
a mature one that seeks to integrate information technology with
business needs and processes both now and in the future. However,

as with any audit style assessment, ITSM is reliant on the data it
can extract and gather and in a data center environment, the data
can come from many disparate physical sources (power, cooling,
network, IT equipment and infrastructure) that are traditionally
captured (and controlled) with a combination of BMS and PMS.
Specifically aimed at data center facilities, DCIM represents
a comprehensive tool that seeks to bridge the traditional gaps
between ITSM, BMS, PMS, etc., by providing a single framework for data center assessment, management and simulation
modeling through capturing and analyzing real-time data from
all aspects of data center operations and being able to (virtually
or actually) harmonize the necessary interdependent actions for
all data center strategic business decisions.
