between 73°F and 74°F (22.7°C and 23.3°C).
The study continued by using a regression curve fitting
of the thermal preference vote and predictions of the
cooling energy demand for that building as a function
of the zone setpoint. These were applied using various forms for the optimization weighting factor . The
optimization also considered various constraints on the
upper and lower limit allowed for the actual mean thermal comfort vote expected, ranging from ±0.5 up to ±3.0
(which is in essence no limit). As would be expected,
the optimized temperature setpoint values tracked the
weighting factor, that is, as ω increases the optimized
setpoint temperature will be higher as well. The thermal
comfort vote constraints may limit the variations in optimized temperature as well, depending on the scenario.
Although this study was a theoretical analysis of a
potential optimization methodology, this approach
could well be incorporated into the control logic of a
more sophisticated building energy management system. This would add a component of model predictive
control to the overall building control system.

as energy costs increase in a series of steps based on price
(Line A), or could be set as a rapidly rising (B) or slowly
rising (C) function. One final consideration is whether a
pre-set constraint should be set on the thermal preference votes, for example limiting them to ±0.5, or ±1.0.
We have been doing some preliminary study into
how such an optimization might be applied in practice
through the doctoral thesis research conducted by one
of the authors of this column (S. Aghniaey). This study
started with experiments to gauge the thermal comfort
perceptions by students in real-world classroom settings
during periods with different temperature setpoints
in cooling mode. The students were not aware until a
post-class survey that the zone temperature setpoint had
been adjusted from normal (typically 71°F [21.6°C]) to
higher levels (up to 78°F [25.6°C]). This study contained
input from more than 1,300 individual responses, and
the results indicated that at least 90% of the occupants
considered the conditions thermally acceptable between
71°F and 76°F (21.6°C to 24.4°), with the peak percentage of people expressing thermal acceptance occurring
