by increasing the PF from 0.94 to 0.99. The project
would cost $475,000 and provides a simple payback of 17
months. Under the current contract with the utility company, the campus is not charged a PF penalty, nor per
kVA. However, as more buildings are being added, along
with other existing buildings' upgrades having additional
power needs, a capacity challenge exists with the utility
feeders to the campus. The campus is looking at different
ways to remedy the situation, which include an upgrade
of the power lines, considering on-site generation, and
whether generation would be used to help with the baseload or just for peak shaving in high demand times. A
correction of the power factor by 5.6% would improve the
delivery capacity by freeing up 0.71 MW that the campus
would use without having to generate it or buy it from
the utility company. This amount of released real power
would equate typically in this case to 5,161 MWh/year,
and a total avoided cost savings of $334,500. These savings enhance the energy performance installation-wide,
increase the electrical grid reliability, alleviate a capacity issue on the utility feeders to the installation, and
