system effi ciencies motor, controller along with impeller
effi ciencies need to be improved. This has implications
for VAV systems when operating very low on the system
curve. Impeller effi ciency is still a dominant factor for
wire-to-air effi ciency along the entire system line.
Conclusion
This study shows that at full-load (design) conditions,
improving the impeller effi ciency will have a
greater impact on the wire-to-air effi ciency compared
to improving only the motor and controller effi ciencies.
However, if the fan system operates at part-load conditions
(less than 50%) then impeller, motor or controller
effi ciency can be increased to improve wire-to-air
effi ciency. This highlights the need for improved fan
selections to improve wire-to-air effi ciency. As design
engineers look at energy use in building systems, fan
selection should be at the forefront of air system design.
Fan selection, combined with system design best practices
that limit losses, will have a profound effect on the
energy use of the air system.
