Energy Simulation Aided
Design for Buildings

The buildings sector is responsible for approximately 40% of primary energy use, 70%
of overall electricity use1 and is regularly identified as a prime target for achievable
carbon emission reductions.2,3 Making improvements in energy efficient building
design has become a major strategic initiative for ASHRAE,4 as well as the industry at
large.5 Building energy simulation has been identified as a key method for improving the design of energy efficient buildings6 and ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 209 - 2018,
Energy Simulation Aided Design for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, was created
to help better define and facilitate this process. The standard defines reliable and
consistent procedures that advance the use of timely energy modeling to quantify the
impact of design decisions at the point in time at which they are being made.
Motivations
With the success of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1,
Appendix G,7 and prevalence of green building rating
systems such as LEED,8 building energy simulation in
the U.S. market was primarily used for demonstration of
compliance or for evaluating beyond-code performance.
Discussions on the BLDG-SIM listserv9 and within the
IBPSA-USA10 community in 2011 sparked desire for
the increased use of building energy modeling (BEM)
to inform building design rather than to simply assess
project performance after the design was complete.11 The
BEM community at the time believed the actual drivers
of building energy performance were not universally
well understood and therefore building energy modelers were often left explaining why BEM results were
not coming out as desired by design teams. BEM practitioners felt they could have a more substantial impact
on building energy performance if BEM were used to
supplement and inform the design process rather than
serving simply as an after-the-fact scorecard.
There was also a wide variation of opinions and industry publications regarding what techniques and procedures constituted design-based energy modeling. The
BEM community decided to create a new ASHRAE standard to help define the solution and reach a consensus
on the topic.
History of the Development of Standard 209
The BEM community helped draft the Title, Purpose,
and Scope (TPS) of the standard, which were reviewed
