RESEARCH REPORT
Grants-in-Aid
ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide $10,000
to each selected graduate student to conduct
research in fields of interest to ASHRAE.
Each grant recipient also has the opportunity of earning an additional
$1,500 honorarium if they author and present a technical paper
on their research project at the Winter or Annual Society Conference .
In 2020 - 2021, zero graduate student grants-in-aid were awarded
due to COVID-19 budget constraints. If the AHR Expo occurs in Las
Vegas, RAC plans to revisit this issue and may decide at the Winter
Conference to reinstate the GIA program before the March 1, 2022,
submission deadline.
The highest-rated recipients hold the added distinction of being
named the Life Members Club GIA recipients, and their grants are
funded by financial contributions from club members.
The latest grants brought the total to $5,247,392 awarded to 681
students during the 52 years the program has been in effect. Recipients
have represented more than 100 different colleges and universities.
To be eligible for an award, the applicant must be a full-time graduate
student who is either currently working on, or proposing to work on, a
research project that has relevance to ASHRAE. The student must also
have a faculty advisor who will supervise the research. Applicants from
all ASHRAE regions worldwide are eligible.
Graduate student grants-in-aid applications can be downloaded from
the " Research " page of the ASHRAE website under the " Research "
page or " Student Zone " page (tinyurl.com/y2epd8dt). Faculty advisors
send completed applications and student transcripts to the Manager
of Research & Technical Services, ASHRAE, 180 Technology Parkway
NW, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092. Due to budget constraints caused
by COVID-19, we are unsure right now if we can award any GIA grants
for SY 21 - 22, but a final decision will be made at the 2022 Winter
Conference .
Research Projects (cont.)
Unsolicited proposals are accepted from organizations
interested in conducting ASHRAE-related research from
self-generated ideas. We prefer to see unsolicited research
proposals submitted in either early May or December
each year so we have suffi cient time to review the proposal
prior to the Society's Annual and Winter conferences,
respectively.
Whether the proposals are solicited from work statements
or are unsolicited, they should include the following
information:
* Precisely what is to be done, by whom, under whose
personal supervision;
* Estimate of man-hours, materials, instruments and
apparatus required, and costs for each;
* Information regarding the investigator's special expertise,
experience and/or ability that especially qualifi
es the individual for the proposed research; and
* Identify the contribution, if any, from the research
organization's resources for conducting the project.
Research
Expenditures
The Board of Directors has approved
$1.8 million for research projects and grants-in-aid
payments for fi scal year 2020 - 2021, but a large portion
of this amount has already been committed to the
approximately 46 active projects already underway. Also
competing for new project funds are eleven tentative
research projects and many other project topics in various
stages of development.
Active projects are summarized in this report. The
summaries include: the title of the project, the start
date, the end date or projected (P) end date, the names
of the contractor and principal investigator, the sponsoring
technical committee monitoring the research,
earmarked co-funding, and a brief description of the
project.
