RESEARCH REPORT
In January 2018, ASHRAE approved Title, Purpose and Scope changes
to ASHRAE Standard 145.2 to remove the restriction on testing electronic
air cleaners. Additional research is needed to determine what changes
are needed to the existing Standard to fully accommodate EAC testing.
No other test standards currently exist to evaluate the gaseous removal
performance of EACs. Therefore, this research project to improve upon
Standard 145.2 would be of benefi t to users such as ASHRAE 62.1, EAC
manufacturers, and the USGBC.
1844-RP Estimating Internal Moisture Generation Rates in
New, Occupied Homes
September 2018 - February 2022 (P); University of Central Florida; Principal Investigator: Eric
Martin; TC 1.12 Moisture Management in Buildings
This unsolicited research proposal (URP) intends to collect data for use
in updating estimates of internal moisture generation rates as a function of
the number of occupants. This URP intents to accomplish this objective by
capitalizing on an existing US Department of Energy funded study already
planning to 1) recruit a sample of new, occupied homes and 2) carry out a
detailed data collection protocol yielding much of the information needed.
This URP proposes to increase the number of homes where key measurements
related to internal moisture generation estimates are being taken
from 15 homes with just DOE funding to 45 with DOE and ASHRAE funding
and inform the data collection and analysis procedures by conducting
validation in simulated occupancy laboratory homes.
1847-RP Updating climatic design information for the
2021 ASHRAE Handbook, Standard 169, and the
Handbook of Smoke Control Engineering

and Smoke
The climatic design conditions in Chapter 14 of the ASHRAE Handbook-
Fundamentals are essential for the sizing and design of building energy
systems. This latest update will to allow for optimal energy effi ciency
measures and ensure that the design conditions are related to the energy
system capacity to meet the climatic loads in a probabilistic sense. In addition,
this research project will provide data in support of the Handbook
of Smoke Control Engineering and of Standard 169.

Standards and Technology

Having a clear, concise, and defensible description of ASHRAE's contributions
will: Encourage more people to become members and/or get involved in
contributing to ASHRAE activities. This could infl uence members, potential
members, and employers. Identify ASHRAE's signifi cance to government/
regulatory policy makers, other professional organizations, and standards
bodies, thus increasing ASHRAE's infl uence and respect for its policies and
products. This could be particularly important for supporting Government
Affairs Committee initiatives, ASHRAE Washington offi ce initiatives, and
international activities (including UN, IEA, and non-US governments).

1566-TRP-C Equations to Estimate Evaporation Rates From
TC 8.10, Mechanical Dehumidifi cation Equipment and Heat Pipes; co-sponsored: TC 9.8, Large Building
Air-Conditioning
This overall project will have several deliverables, of which the fi nal one
is paramount. Namely, the research contractor will generate text, equations
and/or tables with supporting graphics which will be inserted into the ASHRAE
Handbook-HVAC Applications. Designers will use this new information to more
accurately calculate the evaporation loads in pool enclosures. Status: Conditionally
Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1703-RP Performance of Vapor Retarder Systems Used on
Mechanical Insulation
September 1, 2022-August 1, 2023 (P); R&D Services, Inc; Principal Investigator, Michael
Joyce P.E.
The scope of this research is to measure water vapor transmission rates
of assemblies of pipe insulation materials with various joints and sealant
techniques. Most of the research is on various sheet and fi lm vapor retarding
technologies that are widely used in the below ambient mechanical
insulation industry. Several low permeance materials that are used with
or without facers will also be evaluated. Consensus test methods ASTM
E96 and a modifi ed version of European Standard EN 13469 will be used
to evaluate the materials. Project awarded to R&D Services but start of
project is delayed until we can confi rm we can fully fund it.
1716-TRP-C Oil Concentration of Field-Installed Liquid
Chillers with Flooded Type Evaporators
TC 8.2, Centrifugal Machines
Prior ASHRAE research has demonstrated the negative effects of high oil
concentration on fl ooded evaporator shell-side heat transfer performance.
What has been lacking is an understanding of what oil concentration exists
in fi eld installed chillers operating in real world conditions and actual
maintenance practices, and what factors infl uence the oil concentration in
fi eld-installed chillers. The focus of this study is on the types of equipment
used in larger commercial air conditioning or refrigeration applications. The
equipment typical to this type of application has among the highest initial
costs and the highest energy utilization of any in the HVAC&R industry.
