RESEARCH REPORT

Grants-in-Aid
ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide $10,000
to each selected graduate student to conduct
research in fields of interest to ASHRAE. In 2019 - 2020, 19 graduate student grants-in-aid were awarded. These went to: Tareq
Abuimara of Carleton University, Yiyi Chu of Iowa State University,
Afshin Faramarzi of Illinois Institute of Technology, Kheiri Farshad
of Texas A&M University, Ellyn Harges of Auburn University, Brent
Huchuk of University of Toronto, Sangeetha Kumar of University of
Texas at Austin, Qinbo Li of Texas A&M University, Tianyuan Li of
University of Toronto, Jonathan Ore of Purdue University, Gen Pei
of Pennsylvania State University, Pradeep Ramasubramanian of
Portland State University, Hadi Ramin of University of Saskatchewan,
Saad Saleem of Oklahoma State University, Jacob Tabeel of Oregon
State University, Mengjie Tang of University of Texas at Austin,
Danielle Wagner of Purdue University, Yunyang Ye of University of
Colorado Boulder, and Ioannidis Zisis of Concordia University.
Each grant recipient also has the opportunity of earning an additional $1,500 honorarium if they author and present a technical paper
on their research project at the Winter or Annual Society meeting.

Unsolicited proposals are accepted from organizations
interested in conducting ASHRAE-related research from
self-generated ideas. We prefer to see unsolicited research
proposals submitted in either early May or December
each year so we have sufﬁcient time to review the proposal prior to the Society's Annual and Winter conferences, respectively.
Whether the proposals are solicited from work statements or are unsolicited, they should include the following information:
* Precisely what is to be done, by whom, under whose
personal supervision;
* Estimate of man-hours, materials, instruments and
apparatus required, and costs for each;
* Information regarding the investigator's special expertise, experience and/or ability that especially qualiﬁes the individual for the proposed research; and
* Identify the contribution, if any, from the research
organization's resources for conducting the project.

The highest-rated recipients, Jonathan Ore, Mengjie Tang and Ellyn
Harges hold the added distinction of being named the Life Members Club
GIA recipients, and their grants are funded by financial contributions
from club members.
The latest grants brought the total to $5,247,392 awarded to 681
students during the 52 years the program has been in effect. Recipients
have represented more than 100 different colleges and universities.
To be eligible for an award, the applicant must be a full-time graduate
student who is either currently working on, or proposing to work on, a
research project that has relevance to ASHRAE. The student must also
have a faculty advisor who will supervise the research. Applicants from
all ASHRAE regions worldwide are eligible.
Graduate student grants-in-aid applications can be downloaded from
the "Research" page of the ASHRAE website under the "Research"
page or "Student Zone" page (tinyurl.com/y2epd8dt). Faculty advisors
send completed applications and student transcripts to the Manager of
Research & Technical Services, ASHRAE, 180 Technology Parkway NW,
Peachtree Corners, GA 30092. Due to budget constraints caused by
COVID-19, we are unsure right now if we can award any GIA grants for
SY 20 - 21.

Research
Expenditures
The Board of Directors has approved
$1.8 million for research projects and grants-in-aid
payments for ﬁscal year 2020 - 2021, but a large portion of this amount has already been committed to the
approximately 52 active projects already underway. Also
competing for new project funds are eleven tentative
research projects and many other project topics in various stages of development.
Active projects are summarized in this report. The
summaries include: the title of the project, the start
date, the end date or projected (P) end date, the names
of the contractor and principal investigator, the sponsoring technical committee monitoring the research,
earmarked co-funding, and a brief description of the
project.
