What's New in
AMCA's Test Standard
For Rating Fans
AMCA has published a new edition of its foundational fan
test standard, which was last revised in 2007.
I
n 2016, the association updated AMCA Standard 210,
Laboratory Methods of Testing Fans for Certified Aerodynamic Performance Rating. AMCA Standard 210 is co-published
by ASHRAE as ASHRAE Standard 51, and it is accredited
by ANSI as an American national standard.
This standard is the cornerstone of the AMCA Certified
Ratings Program for most types of fans. It is also is being
considered by the U.S. Department of Energy as the foundation
for fan testing in conjunction with regulations in development
for commercial and industrial fans and blowers.
AMCA Standard 210 has a long history. This year marks
the 12th revision of the standard, with the most recent revision
occurring in 2007. It was first published in 1923 as The Fan
Test Codes, and it was first published by AMCA in 1960 as
Bulletin 210, AMCA Standard Test Code for Air Moving
Devices.
The 2016 edition of AMCA Standard 210 is available at the
AMCA Store, and members receive a 50 percent discount on
this and all other standards. Multi-user licenses for the document are available for purchase, and a redline version showing
what has changed since the 2007 edition is available.
AMCA Standard 210 is currently being translated into
Chinese, Latin American Spanish and European Spanish.

* A normative annex with a detailed description of
fan outlet area with examples of how it is measured for
various fan types was added. This supports the consistent
calculation of fan total pressure and fan total efficiency,
which are becoming more widespread in the industry.
* The revised use of symbols and subscripts for fan input
power clarify which drive components are included in the
power measurement. This was needed to support the reporting of electrical power and calculations, as well as to improve
harmonization with another major fan test standard, ISO
5801, Industrial Fans-Performance Testing Using Standardized Airways.
* The procedure for checking the effectiveness of airflow

into a driven fan was added, along with the corresponding
wire-to-air efficiency calculation. It is used for some
