For Hurricane-Prone Regions
A look at the very specific requirements
within the hurricane-prone and
wind-borne debris regions.

T

he International Building Code and International
Mechanical Code only permit exclusive, high performance louver products within the hurricane-prone and
wind-borne debris regions - and for good reason. The damage
caused by wind driven rain intrusion and airborne debris
resulting from hurricanes and tropical storms can prove catastrophic. In order to keep people safe, manufacturers should
be familiar with the codes governing these regions, and they
should understand how to ensure that louvers meet the requirements laid out in the codes.

HURRICANE-PRONE REGION AND WIND-BORNE
DEBRIS REGION DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTS

The International Building Code specifies hurricane-prone
regions to be any location along the U.S. Atlantic Ocean or
Gulf of Mexico coasts where the ultimate design wind speed
for Risk Category II buildings is greater than 51.4 m/s (115 mph).
Additionally, the International Building Code classifies Hawaii,
Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa
as hurricane-prone regions.
According to the same International Building Code, windborne debris regions are areas within hurricane-prone regions.
An area is a wind-borne debris region if it is located within
1.61 km (1 mile) of the coastal mean high water line, where
the ultimate design wind speed is 58 m/s (130 mph) or greater.
