The National Weather Service issued a rare Tornado Emergency, reserved for only the largest and most violent tornadoes. Most buildings in Greensburg were damaged or destroyed by the EF-5 tornado that was the worst to hit southwest Kansas since the 1960s. The civic leaders of Greensburg chose to rebuild their town — in their own words, “Stronger, Better, Greener…”— and develop a sustainable comprehensive master plan that would guide the town’s transformation. 18 HIGH PERFORMING BUILDINGS Summer 2012
