Celebrating 100 years - 200

200 years old by the time you read
this! Ironically, the plaster and stucco
process has not changed a great deal
during the last 100 years. The materials have certainly been upgraded, but
the application methods are still today
very similar. We do not expect this to
change a great deal. However, we do
expect the change will come from the
way we purchase our material. I expect
that you will be buying direct from
the manufacturer, and the distributor
will have fallen by the wayside. We see
this as a cost-cutting measure for the
manufacturers and contractors, and
we sense this will happen with new
and improved shipping methods and
inventory control. We also see prefabrication playing a role in the demise of
the distributor; you will have figured
out a way to purchase material direct,
manufacture the prefabrication units
and ship direct to project sites.
Of course we are certain communication will have changed also.
Although we have very little verbal
communication today, it will be even
less in the future. We want to leave you
with this thought: The construction
industry has been built around relationships that still exist today. Our
hope for you is that this has not been
lost in all the technology that you have
available now. It's not always about
200

the money. Take pride in the quality
of scopes you perform. Take pride in
your company; many sacrifices have
been made in order for you to be there.
Lastly, give your customer what you
would expect to get.

Long Term: Fully sustainable building.

The red list of products will be redefined and buildings will no longer
contain products that cannot be fully
and efficiently recycled or repurposed.
The living environment and space
utilization will be optimized. Excess
will be outside the building rather
than inside. Green spaces will be
premium spaces. All residential and
commercial structures will be factory
built using a conventional factory
setting or by mobile factories capable
of producing panels and pods onsite
to reduce freight and streamline the
process. Non-value added fieldwork
would be eliminated.

With the rise of

electric cars and environmental concerns, multi-family
housing 100 years from now will be
built with electric car ports at each
level of the housing complex. These
carports and the cars themselves will
be a part of the exterior design of the

building. Architects will design these
housing structures with a standard
vehicle type that will have a certain
shape and color to it that complements
the overall beauty of the structure.
These custom "condo-cars" will be
lifted and suspended into place at
each residence making it a part of
the overall aesthetic of the building.
When a person purchases one of these
condominiums, the electric vehicle is
a part of the purchase of the unit and
will remain as part of the building's
exterior even when the unit is sold to
another individual.

Building a Symbiotic Future
Construction times will be reduced to
practically nothing. The use of advanced
materials that are lighter yet stronger
than present-day building products
will help make this a reality. With
100 years more of advanced robotics
and 3-D printing technology, city-size
connected buildings will sprout up to
accommodate a shifting landscape and
combat the effects of climate change.
These connected buildings of the future will take on a symbiotic quality, at
once more in tune with surrounding
natural energy sources (wind, solar,
hydroelectric, geothermal) as well as
with the other buildings connected to

them, forming a sort of mega-city unto
themselves. Thanks to this connection
between our natural and manmade
environments, our work and living
spaces will produce energy rather
than require it.
So, those things will happen, or
you know, the space aliens will tell
us how to build stuff.

As if the next 10 years isn't hard enough

to predict, what about the next 100
years? The human involvement on
a job will probably be very limited.
The advancement in robotics by 2118
could have all the knowledge and
labor we need to complete even the
most daunting projects. Twenty-fourhour workdays could be the norm, and
payment for work complete should
be instant. A small group of talented
individuals can be all that is necessary to complete any job presented to
them. Our industry could no longer
have a need for skilled laborers but
will require only well-educated engineers and architects. The materials
commonly used today will be obsolete.
We envision walls that beat today's
Underwriter Laboratories and sound
transmission coefficient standards that
are lighter, thinner and stronger. The
development of walls and ceilings
