Design considerations
and objectives were to create
an aesthetic, functional and
efficient look for the medical
center, reports Tiana Lemons
NCDIQ, IIDA, EDAC, director of
interior design for Gould Turner
Group. "The administration and
design team wanted to create
a space to welcome families
and attract patients to the
facility," she says.
The space was designed
to be appealing to women
and families. The use of
curved and circular elements
softens the space, as do
calming colors and the use of
natural-looking materials. The
completed space exudes a
warm, appealing atmosphere
for patients and visitors, as
well as a functional, versatile
and effective workplace for
the staff and end users.

One of the most
challenging and noteworthy
aspects of the project, say
Hodges, was a full height,
curved wall system located in
the chapel. "This wall system
had a full height, back-lit
obscured glass panel in
the center that had to slide
back into the wall to access
the lighting behind it. Our
specialty department did an
outstanding job fabricating
this in our facility then took it
apart in manageable sections
to deliver and reassemble on
location," he points out.
"Our engineering team
and project management
team worked closely with
the contractor and architect
to find solutions to specific
issues," he continues. "Issues
like how to access lighting
behind a large, seemingly
fixed glass panel in the
middle of a full height
curved wall."
