Nature provided the
beautiful terrain for the hilly
course. A winding, steep
driveway leads up to the
new clubhouse where the
west-facing terrace overlooks
the fantastic views of the
Berkshire Mountains. From its
vantage point, the clubhouse
can be seen from almost
every hole on the 18-hole
course.

Not a typical clubhouse,
movement throughout
the building is designed
specifically to enhance
the opportunity for chance
meetings, the viewing and
exploration of artwork,
and enjoying the comforts
of casual social spaces
abundant with the sights and
sounds of a fun and festive
lifestyle.
Complete with all the
amenities and an extensive
art collection, design of the
clubhouse was put in the
hands of TMS Architects,
Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Architectural woodwork for
the project was fabricated
by Millwork One, an AWI
member firm from Cranston,
Rhode Island.

Luxurious Style
The primary design
objective, explains Jason
Bailey of TMS Architects, was
to create a family-oriented
club grounded in a style of
a New England farmhouse
and the owner's fascination
with western arts and crafts.
Objectives were achieved,
he continues, through the
use of 'worn-in' woodwork
and furniture in
the more casual
social areas to
make guests feel
more relaxed."
More
traditional
and refined
woodwork was
used in the
transitional
spaces
between casual
locations to maintain a
more upscale aesthetic
and form a backdrop to the
client's unique art and sport
memorabilia collection.

Styling centered around
the client's love of horses
which is a theme exhibited
in the artwork, furnishings
and even woodwork with the
use of reclaimed barnboard
and horizontal shiplap
wainscoting which "feels
more indicative to an upscale
equestrian barn setting,"
describes Bailey.

Worn Wood
Owners and designers
determined that the
architectural woodwork
would be the focus for the
design - what everyone
would see, touch and
be comfortable using. It
had to look "worn" and
approachable, but also be
well built so it could stand up
to the constant use of a large
clubhouse.
