Design Solutions - Fall 2017 - 40
Part of an $800,000
renovation, the design
was commissioned to the
architectural firm of LS3P,
Charlotte, North Carolina.
Architectural woodwork for
the AWI quality-certified
project was fabricated by
Watson Wood Works, a QCP
licensed firm headquartered
in Winston-Salem.
The renovated courtroom
area is 1,760 square feet and
the adjacent administrative
suite is another 1,890 square
feet of space. The project
successfully met a fasttrack schedule with design
starting in March 2016 and
renovations commencing in
July 2016 with a completion
date of January 2, 2017.
The Courtroom
The business court had
to meet the functional
requirement of a working
court, with areas for the
judge, witness, clerk and jury
while incorporating current
audio and visual technology.
In addition to the functional
requirements the space had
to convey the dignity and
stature of the judicial process.
"These objectives were
achieved by a complete
gutting of the original space
and redesign of mechanical,
lighting and fire sprinkler
systems to allow higher
ceilings in the courtroom,"
explains LS3P's Scott Baker.
"The architectural woodwork
in the courtroom creates and
defines the focal areas for
the judge, jury and witness
through paneling while
establishing the traditional
tone preferred by the
administrative office of the
courts."
