Works, the woodwork features
are quartered Cherry with a
clear finish. "The architect
and owner value the natural
grain characteristic of Cherry
and opted to showcase the
natural beauty of the veneer
and lumber," he notes.

Baker notes that the
challenge was integrating
new technology into the
woodwork. "The North
Carolina court system is
incorporating more use
of technology into the
functioning of courtrooms.
Incorporating and allowing
for the use of electronic
technology into the judge's
bench and jury area called for
a creative process to allow it
to fit with a traditional design
aesthetic."
The use of mock-ups, he
continues, allowed the entire
team to collaboratively come
up with a jury screen design
that is visually appealing
while allowing for full writing
and viewing functions to
occur.
The most noteworthy item
on the project, says Watson,
is the paneling at the judge's
bench and walls. "The most
difficult aspect was the
number of inside and outside
corners," he explains.

The courtroom is comprised
of the judge's bench, which
spans the front and center
of the room; the jury box to
one side; the counsels' desks
in the center; and the gallery
seating to the rear. The judge's
bench is slightly elevated and
has a continuous front wall
that is paneled, below the
desk. The rear wall behind
the judge features paneling
and a North Carolina state
seal that is centered behind
the judge. This provides the
judge's bench as a focal point
for the front of the room as is
appropriate.
The paneled modesty screens
in front of a two-tier jury box
complement the judge's bench
and provide functional writing
surfaces for the jurors as well
as audio and visual electronic
access to materials presented
during proceedings. The
reminder of the room provides
trim accents and pilasters
which continue the richness of
the detailing appropriate for a
courtroom space.
