ANSI-APPROVED
Of the three kinds of
standards - international,
regional, and national -
AWI's Technical Director
and Technical Committee
members have worked hard
during the past two years to
have the Standards writing
process approved by ANSI
(American National Standards
Institute). Once the process
is complete, it goes to ANSI
for the approval process and
when approved, it becomes
the single, national ANSI
approved standard for
woodwork.
International standards
are developed by ISO, IEC,
and ITU. Countries can
adopt these standards
directly for their national
use.
Regional standards are
prepared by a specific
region, such as the
European Union, which
develops EN standards.
National standards can
be developed by a national
standards body (like ANSI)
or other accredited bodies.

AWI is just one of the 220+
Accredited ANSI Standards
Developers currently engaged
in writing standards. More
than a dozen product
specific standards have been
identified by AWI's Technical
Committee that will go
through the ANSI approved
AWI standards development
process. Five Standards
will be held by AWI as the
"Primer" Standards and will
not be developed through
the ANSI approved process.
Those are the standards
that contain the information
for Submittals, Care and
Storage, Materials, Finishing
and the Glossary.
As the Standards are
being developed largely
for viewing on mobile
platforms, those product
specific standards will
contain links that will guide
the user to glossary words
and illustrations of details
that will make planning and
evaluation of woodwork
easier.
UNIVERSAL CRITERIA
Many organizations or
industries believe the purpose
of writing a standard is to work
cooperatively with users and
producers to identify those
criteria which are universally
or widely accepted, agreed
upon, or established means as
a means of determining what
something should be, and to
enhance to quality of life and
improve the competitiveness
of businesses operating in
the global marketplace. In
many industries, the Standard
is created to act as the
foundation of evaluation so
that a stamp may be applied
to the product as verification
that the standard for that
product has been met.
