Design of the
330,000-square-foot
renovation project was
handled by SKB Architecture
and Design, a firm located in
Washington, DC. Architectural
woodwork for the project was
fabricated by Brochsteins
Inc., an AWI manufacturing
member firm from Houston,
Texas. The overall project
took 18 months to complete
and was executed in phases
of two floors at a time.
According to Claudia
Brown, project manager for
Brochsteins, items fabricated
for the project included
veneer credenzas; doors; wall
paneling in the conference
room, along hallways and
in elliptical-shaped room
dubbed "pimento walls"
by the architects; a veneer
paneled auditorium wall and
stage proscenium; perforated
solid surface wall panels; a
series of perforated lacquer
screen walls and pony wall
caps; enclosures; and primed
bases.

Elegant Style
The primary design
consideration was to find
ways to reflect light into the
inner parts of the space and
make the entire office, with
its low ceilings, seem more
open and larger scaled,
notes Mark Baughman, AIA,
IIDA, design director at SKB
Architecture and Design. At
the same time, he explains,
wood selections needed to
represent a combination of
elegance and informality
which are the characteristics
of the company's culture.

"Although the building is
on the most important street
in the world, the windows
were very small and therefore
white lacquer paneling clads
the entire exterior wall of
the conference center and
cafeteria floors to reflect the
minimal daylight and the
supplemental artificial light
detailed into the exterior
wall," he explains. "This
created a net lighting effect
akin to an all glass wall.
White lacquer paneling was
used strategically in interior
walls where the reflection
made the spaces seem more
bright and dimensional."
Veneer finishes used
throughout the project
included elegant and
warm quartered Paldao
and quartered Eucalyptus
with felt in a variety of
whimsical colors creating a
formal yet comfortable work
environment. "In addition,
we created perforated wall
screen using white lacquer
and white solid surface
with polished stainless
steel frames, providing a
modern touch and contrast
to the warmer wood and
felt walls," says Brown. Each
element created unique
textures, visual interest and
functionality.
