The museum is a publicprivate partnership between
the U.S. Marine Corps and
the Marine Corps Heritage
Foundation. The foundation
was established in 1979 as
a non-profit organization
to support the historical
programs of the Marine
Corps in ways not possible
through government funds.
The foundation's current
primary mission is to secure
the necessary funding to
complete the construction
of the National Museum
of the Marine Corps. They
also support the museum's
volunteer and educational
programs.
To get the story right,
the museum put together
a diverse group of senior
advisors to help guide the
process and ensure that
the whole story is told. The
new historical galleries tell
of Marines in both combat
and humanitarian efforts
as well as on the home
front. These galleries will tell
every Marine's story because
while not every one of them
serves in combat, they're
each equally important to the
mission. The senior advisors
also told the team that if they
don't tell the Marine family
story "we will have missed
the mark." The team took
that to heart and has not
only included an exhibit on
the Marine family, but has
also woven it into the overall
exhibits.
Build Team
Construction on the
museum's 115,000 squarefoot "final phase" included
work on the Medal of Honor
Theatre, a giant screen
movie theatre that features
a destination film, and the
Regimental Boardroom, both
completed in July 2017.
Architectural woodwork for
this quality-certified project
was fabricated
by Annandale
Millwork and
Allied Systems
Corporation,
an AWI firm
located in
Winchester,
Virginia. Architect
of record on the project
was Fentress Architects,
Washington, DC.

According to Margaret
Wester of Annandale
Millwork, woodwork elements
provided by her firm included
wall paneling, a 30-foot by
eight-foot radius conference
table, eight-foot-high display
cases with sliding glass
doors, solid surface window
stools and countertops, and
custom cabinetry.
Quartered Maple veneer
is used at the theatre lobbies
and for office space wall
paneling with hard White
Maple casing. Prefinished
Mahogany veneer is featured
for the wall paneling in the
boardroom and cabinetry
with solid plain sawn
Mahogany casing stained
to match the veneer.
