IS THIS EVERYTHING?
What should be included
on shop drawings? Shop
drawing requirements are
the same for all architectural
woodwork projects regardless
of Aesthetic Grade specified.
Those requirements are
listed in the AWS on pages
28-33. Take a few minutes
and compare the shop
drawings being reviewed to
the requirements found in
the AWS.
You should be able to
spot the difference between
proper shop drawings and a
rough concept sketch. If the
"shop drawing" came to you
in the form of a paper napkin
with random pencil markings
on it, it's time to review the
requirements.
Photocopies of the original
architectural drawings with
dimensions written in are
also not shop drawings but,
they are field dimensions and
notes useful for the person to
detail the shop drawings.
Once the woodwork
company submits two sets
of shop drawings for review,
what happens next? Prior
to fabrication, the general
contractor reviews them
along with the design
professional and owner's
representative. Those
charged with shop drawing
review should be familiar with
current woodwork fabrication
methods and materials, have
an understanding or working
knowledge of the referenced
woodwork standards, the
specifications and other
contract requirements.
FROM SUBMITTAL TO
APPROVAL
Now comes the good part.
For the design professional,
the approval stage provides
an opportunity to review the
manufacturer's proposed
shop drawings. However,
they are NOT
an extension
of the design
development
process;
therefore,
changes of
intended concept
by either party
during the shop
drawing review
process may
result in contract
changes reflected in dollar
cost and/or additional
schedule time. During the
review process the design
professional should consider
the following four possible
outcomes:
* Approved = Proceed
with Fabrication
* Approved as Noted
= Proceed with
Fabrication. The design
professional keeps one
copy and a marked
set is returned to the
manufacturer with a
request for the required
number of final copies.
This helps keep the
project on schedule.
* Revise and Resubmit =
The design professional
returns one set
requesting correction
and resubmittal. The
other set is kept by the
design professional
to check against
the resubmittal.
The woodworker
incorporates the
necessary changes
and resubmits shop
drawings for second
review. Changes in
materials, methods that
impact time and cost are
then discussed.
* Rejected = Schedule a
meeting.
MEETING SCHEDULES
Those who review shop
drawings often hold the keys
to maintaining the project's
intended schedule. The
architectural woodwork's
schedule, much like other
finish trades, are impacted
by upstream delays. The
contractor is trying to wrap
up the interior finishes, the
landscapers are planting
trees and laying out walkways
and the owner is eager to
gain occupancy. Right now,
timing is everything!
As the AWS states
on page 25, "The design
professional should work with
the manufacturer through
the contractor to determine
the maximum "approval-tofabrication" timeline needed
to keep the job on schedule.
Then it's the responsibility
of the general contractor to
coordinate shop drawings
with the work of other trades
and to ensure that previously
agreed hold to/guaranteed
dimensions are enforced.
Communicating changes
in field dimensions or design
to the subcontractors is the
responsibility of the design
professional to the contractor
and contractor to the
subcontractor.
Preparation for any trip
increases the chances of a
successful journey. Knowing
the expected outcomes
ahead of time will increase
the chances of a successful
architectural woodwork
project when complete and
for years into the future.
