You'll notice in Section 3.0
Requirements of this new standard
that dimensions will be shown first in
metric followed by Standard Imperial
dimensions in brackets. This change
is consistent with all the new AWI
Standards being published between
2019 and 2021 and correlates with
the global use of AWI standards by
design professionals and woodworkers
in design, tooling and manufacturing
processes as custom wood products
coordinate with other trades. Other
helpful information includes: what
constitutes a change, how to properly
facilitate a change, explanation of
impact of changes, description of
suggested substitutions,

Is the finish a part of the sample
I'm supposed to review? Yes. This
is a nice way to get an idea of the
manufacturer's final execution of
the project. The finish applied to the
sample indicates what you would
expect to see for the final finish on
the installed project. AWI 100-2018
Submittals Standard requires for
transparent or stained finishes a
minimum of three sets bound together,
of three samples each. Samples shall
indicate the range of color and grain to
be expected for each finish selection.
For opaque finishes, a minimum of
three samples are required for each
color selection.

Is a mock-up considered a sample?
Yes. In highly functional settings like
hospital rooms, it's a great idea to
build one whole room and furnish it,
then test it all out to see if it all installs
properly. People can move around
in the room using all the movable
equipment that will come and go
from the room while it's occupied and
ensures the space will function as
intended. Those products become a
part of the completed project and a
part of the contract.
Is there a process for this? Yes.

Contractor Responsibility and further
in Section 3.4 Design Professional
Responsibilities. Using this process will
help keep the project moving forward
and avoid sample submittals and
shop drawings from falling through
the cracks. These steps, when done
according to instructions keep the
woodwork's production and installation
on schedule.
SHOP DRAWINGS: WHAT TO EXPECT

Even the paper size and scale are
required to be specific sizes! (see AWI
100-2018 Submittals Standard page
4, 3.2.3b). Drawing sheets shall be a
minimum of 279mm x 432mm [11" x 17"]
and a maximum of 610mm x 914 [24
x 36]. Each sheet shall be sequentially
numbered and dated. Drawings may be
formatted as PDF electronic submittals.
SAMPLES: WHAT TO EXPECT

In a world of infinite interpretations
and possibilities for a sample, the new
AWI 100-2018 Submittals Standard
defines the expectation for samples.
Wood samples and other physical
materials should be representative
of that which is actually intended for
the project. Panel samples are to be
203mm x 203mm square [8" x 8"]
and 6.4mm [.250"] thick. Solid lumber
should be as wide as possible based
on the typical widths available of
that species and 203mm [8"] long x a
minimum of 19.1mm [.750"] thick.
