Design Solutions - Fall 2020 - 28

In July of 2017 design
began on the second
Potawatomi hotel tower and
expansion, an $80 million
addition to the previous 2014
hotel and meeting room
addition to the Potawatomi
Casino. The project added 119
rooms to a 19-story tower,
a spa and salon, a banquet
kitchen, pastry kitchen, board
room, and feature ballroom.
Construction was completed
in July of 2019.

Architecture and
design for the project was
commissioned to Cuningham
Group Architecture, Inc. of
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Architectural woodwork for
the project was fabricated by
Lange Bros. Woodwork Co.,
an AWI member firm from
Milwaukee.

Addition Design
"Both the client and our
design team wanted the
addition to be sympathetic
with the hotel tower design so
that the second tower didn't
feel like an addition," notes
Cuningham's Sarah Bremer.
"Since the first tower had
just been completed in 2014
we felt the guest rooms and
meeting rooms still resonated
very well. There were elements
we all gravitated to and we
used those as opportunities
to keep pressing the design
forward."

"Inspiration had come
from the waters of Lake
Michigan, the surrounding
forests, and the tribe's
identity as Keepers of the
Flame and these continued
to be reference points for
our design development,"
she continues. "The previous
design had also creatively
featured the use of wood in
the lobby and ballrooms and
we wanted to continue these
points of reference as well."
