The good thing was that the
owner could pick exactly
what he wanted with very
little fuss and relied on the
team's expertise. We had
several sets of samples to get
the right one. "
The Challenge
The most challenging
element was how to create a
traditional space in a small,
low ceiling basement without
windows and have the space
feel inviting, comfortable and
intimate but not crowded
or uncomfortable in any
way, points out Pearson.
" Structural modifications to
the basement exterior walls
were necessary along with
waterproofing improvement
with air ventilation behind
the wood paneling were
significant issues, " he says.
" Also, low ceiling height,
ductwork modifications,
and other existing structural
elements necessitated
specific arrangements of
paneling to maintain proper
scale. " Since the basement
was a concrete floor, special
waterproofing as well as
furred ventilation was
necessary for the flooring
application.
" Given that the room had
a short ceiling and the fact
that there had to be ductwork
on the ceiling as well meant
that some things had to be
scaled down to look right, "
notes Leininger. " There were
a lot of unusual turns and
corners that had to have the
panel stiles and rails in the
correct place, and that took
a lot of thinking and a few
meetings. The fact that it
was in a basement with no
windows meant that we had
to have everything just right
to keep things looking in
proportion and not too low. "
There were mechanical
and electrical considerations
on every wall it seemed, he
adds. " The architect provided
the architectural drawings
as he saw them, and we had
to figure out how to make
it all work with what was
there and get it into our shop
drawings. Project Manager
Nathan McKinney spent many
hours drawing and redrawing
elevations as issues surfaced.
We have had plenty of
experience in this regard and
it was very helpful that we
and Jeff Pearson were on the
same page. "
