the northeast and Caraway
Mountain to the southwest.
Noteworthy Areas
One of most noteworthy
and difficult aspects was
the Caracole lobby trim
and three-story staircase,
and challenge of tying the
level trim into the spiral
trim, reports Cox as was
the staircase leading to the
glass dome sky bar and fifth
floor bar. " Other challenges
included the A.R.T. columns
with very intricate mouldings
that had to tie into cast metal
corners; the reception desk
and beverage station solid
surface tops, hoods and
fronts; and the last minute
upfitting of an elevator with
trim and paneling which had
to be fire rated. "
" We turned to wood to
at the elevator leading to the
fourth floor hospitality areas.
They also produced for the
project the reception desk
and beverage station on the
first floor, casework in the
hospitality areas, the bar on
WALNUT
the fifth floor and the A.R.T.
design library. Walnut, Poplar
and Maple were used to
reflect the design intent.

According to Jeff Cox,
president of Rowland
Woodworking, the firm
fabricated a variety of
mouldings; large sevenpiece
crowns; door and
cased opening trim; lobby
trim and crown moulding for
Caracole's three-story spiral
staircase; trim for the fourth
floor spiral staircase to the
fifth floor sky bar; intricate
column trim at the A.R.T.
lobby; and trim and wainscot
unique expression of each
showroom, explains Freeman.
The stairs allow for vertical
flow between the three floors
of the building dedicated
to furniture display. " At the
Caracole lobby, the spiral
stair has pronounced and
ornate wood moulding with a
crisp, very light color palette.
At the A.R.T. lobby, the stair
has understated moulding
and trim and a more
monotone color palette. "
The fourth floor is
occupied by hospitality and
office space, again divided
for the two furniture brands.
Hospitality areas are divided
by an executive dining
area for use by the parent
company. At the center of
the hospitality area is a spiral
staircase with a cast iron feel
railing with accompanying
wood trim that leads to the
fifth-floor outdoor terrace
and domed area. The 6,700
square foot outdoor terrace
accomplish the one-of-akind
detailing required for
the concept, " says Freeman.
" Wood also provided the
ability to enhance specific
characteristics and the
personality of each company.
The sky bar for instance
received an original handcrafted
ornamentation
pattern applied to the
curvilinear surface. Dark
stained Walnut provided
a striking contrast to the
applied ornamentation.
Wood trim throughout
the project was selected
individually to accommodate
specific finish techniques
and colors requested by the
designers and the furniture
manufacturers. "
