PREVENTIVE MEDICINE.

Shop Drawings and Samples,
the submittals, are the primary visual
communication between the custom
woodwork manufacturer and the
general contractor who ultimately
answers to the building owner. Along
with diligently reviewed submittals
and timely communication they keep
the expectations uniform among all
parties, reduce surprises and help
meet the project budget and timeline.
They protect the owner, design
professional and woodworker and
remain the intellectual property of the
manufacturer/supplier.
In 3.0 Requirements found on page
3, the conversion of dimensions and
tolerances to metric is explained. The
metric system makes AWI Standards
use more inclusive and accessible
internationally. Metric dimensions and
tolerances will be shown first, followed
by decimals of Standard Imperial Units
[SI or IU] in brackets and in a few cases,
followed by a fraction (in parenthesis).

The US Customary system
of measurement is typically a
" soft " conversion of the metric
measurements. To make the metric
number more conceptually coherent
and consistent, most
conversions for anything
less than 152.4mm [6 " ]
are " soft " converted to
the nearest 0.1mm. for
measurements greater
than 152.4mm [6 " ],
the " soft " value is
converted to the
nearest 1mm.
Project
submittals
start the
conversation
about what the
owner wants. Therefore,
suggestions, substitutions
and changes may happen.
Page 3, 3.2.b, explains that changes
must be identified within the submittal
package. The manufacturer/supplier
must then request approval of the
suggested changes by submitting a
formal request for approval. Woodwork
manufacturers will itemize suggestions
and substitutions separately from the
shop drawings with the reason for
the change and anticipated impact
on other trades, cost and schedule.
Methods of manufacturing, such as
joinery details, are not considered
material changes.

The 12-page AWI 100 Submittals
Standard can be understood in
about a half hour. Start with the
Table of Contents which indicate
the most important things design
professionals need to know while
planning a woodwork project, how you
communicate during the project, etc.
As they affect the whole team,
submittals are critically important to
the installer who needs them to plan
how the products will travel through
the jobsite, where they will be stored
and how many people are needed to
install any tools or special equipment
and where each part gets installed.
The general contractor needs them
to assure the owner they are acting
responsibly for them and to the trades
whose work will come in contact with
the woodwork. The fabricator uses them
to make sure the right materials are
ordered, and everything is made to the
expectations of the owners, on time.
REVIEW QUICKLY.

The project schedule depends on quick
review of the submittals. Delaying them
negatively affects the production schedule
and consequently the whole project.
Trades following the woodwork installation
will have their schedules impacted by the
slowdown and behind the scenes, the
domino effect begins as one trade after
the other needs to adjust their schedule to
accommodate the delay. The " go ahead "
is when the shop drawings or approved
samples return to the woodworker, not
before. The
maximum time
to review them
should never
exceed 10
days.
