Just as the use of Standards is
important to ensure that everyone
can speak the same language, AWI
is committed to keeping our glossary
up-to-date because consistent
terminology matters. The overall
appearance can be evaluated in two
ways for either Custom or Premium
grade -- " compatible for color and
grain " or " well matched for color and
grain. " While these may sound about
the same, the AWI Glossary at https://
awinet.org/standards/glossary explains
the difference.
We occasionally hear of an
apparent color difference between
the solid lumber and the veneer on
the project. See 3.4.2.3 Doors, Stile
and Rail. When solid lumber is used
with veneer panels, there is likely to
be some color disparity between the
two materials as veneer is steamed
while being processed and lumber is
kiln-dried. Both these process steps
affect the properties of the woods and
will result in the wood color changing
to some degree. Extra care is needed
when selecting the materials to find
both lumber and veneer that will work
together. A specifier exerts control over
that outcome by selecting the definition
that matches the owner's expectation.
Talented finishers will be familiar with
methods to minimize the difference.

There are two main types of
cabinet construction, each with its
own advantage in use, design, and
fabrication methods. Figures 15-16
and Figures 43-46 illustrate some
features typical to Frameless and
Face Frame Construction. Face Frame
construction is more typically used in
residential construction and in certain
areas around the world. Regardless,
Figures 20-22 illustrate some of the
requirements
for grain layout
on Flush Panel
cabinet doors and
drawer fronts.
Notice the
similarities and
differences in the
grain direction
across all three
aesthetic grades.
At first glance,
Premium grade
and Custom
grade appear
fairly similar, but see 3.4.2.5(b) for
a description of the differences in
requirements between all three grades.
This is a good example of how the
new Standards delineate woodwork
aesthetics and is a great reference
when unsure of how you should specify
a project. By reviewing the Standard
and the differences between aesthetic
grades, you will be able to write spec
documents that will help to deliver a
successful end result.

PROJECT INTEGRITY

The integrity of a casework project
depends not only on the casework
itself, but the installation as well. All
information regarding installation
including who is responsible for
blocking, the types of fasteners to be
used, and how communications are
organized can be found in the ANSI/
AWI 0620-2018 Finish Carpentry/
Installation Standard. As in the past,
AWI does not provide advice
on installations that must
comply with seismic codes.
When seismic construction is
required, such requirements
and details shall be clearly
stated in the contract
documents.
There are two methods
for a manufacturer to be
compliant with the ANSI/AWI
0641-2019 Architectural Wood
Casework Standard. First, AWI
is in the process of testing
a variety of construction
methods for base cabinets, wall
cabinets, and tall cabinets. Once the
data has been finalized, it will be
combined and put into an official AWI
Test Report that will be made available
to members at no cost. Included in
the report are the technical drawings,
material information, and joinery details
that a manufacturer would need to
follow in their production exactly. The
test report will then be used to verify
the construction method used in order
to show compliance.
The second method is for a
manufacturer that has its own proprietary
method of construction and specific
core materials that they wish to continue
using. In this instance, the manufacturer
would need to have their construction
method and materials tested and
assigned a duty level. AWI will issue a
separate and confidential report to the
manufacturer that would be used to
show compliance with the Standard.
