Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Wednesday, July 11, 2012
Established in 1874 in Golden, Colorado, the Colorado School of Mines is a public research university devoted to engineering and applied science. With broad expertise in resource exploration, extraction, production and utilization, “Mines” has distinguished itself by developing a curriculum and research program geared toward responsible stewardship of the earth and its resources. The tour will cover three main attractions: First, the Center for Welding, Joining and Coatings Research (CWJCR), housed in Nathaniel P. Hill Hall on campus. You will see first-hand the education and research programs on welding and joining-related topics at the Colorado School of Mines. You will tour several of the welding and materials testing laboratories in Hill Hall and Brown Building. The second stop will be the CSM Geological Museum, which houses a wide variety of geological and mineralogical specimens, including one of the State’s two Goodwill moon rocks. The museum serves as the state repository for Colorado’s mineral heritage. A brief third stop will be the U.S. Geological Survey, Golden Earthquake Center, where seismic activities worldwide are monitored. Duration: 08:00 to 13:00 on Monday (includes travel time). Actual time of tour is about 09:00 to 12:00. Restrictions: Limited to 35 people / Cost: U.S. $65.
