VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: APRIL DAVIS SANCHEZ
April's dedication to the deaf and hard of hearing community shines
In July of 2021, April Davis
Sanchez joined the Baytown
Visitor Information Center
volunteer team after learning that
City staff in the tourism division
had a passion for reaching
the deaf and hard of hearing
community. The team had a goal
of creating a visitor experience that was accommodating
to all travelers, and April wanted to help lead the initiative.
April has become a leader, spearheading the tourism
division's deaf-friendly projects. Some of her outstanding
work includes helping the city host the first completely
deaf-friendly GeoTour in the world, translating the
division's video catalog into ASL, and recruiting others
in the deaf and hard of hearing community to join in the
volunteer program. April has also helped with workshops
for the tourism staff and other volunteers. With April's
help, the Visitor Center was named a " Best of 2021
Deaf Friendly Business " in the United States by the site
deaffriendly.com. Thank you, April, for making Baytown
a better place for all.

What are boards, commissions, and committees?
The City of Baytown has many boards, commissions, and
committees, which are made up primarily of resident
volunteers who provide their insight and expertise to
support and advise City Council and staff on a variety
of issues and policies.
Who can serve on a board, commission,
or committee?
Each applicant must be a resident who lives in the city
limits of Baytown. An applicant may also reside in the extra
territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) for certain boards.
Who makes the appointments to the boards,
commissions, or committees?
The Mayor and City Council appoint each member.
What boards, commissions, and committees
does the City have?
Baytown has 20 associated groups to join! Here are just
a few: Baytown Crime Control and Prevention District
(CCPD), Civil Service Commission, Construction Board
of Adjustments and Appeal, Planning and Zoning
Commission, Sign Committee, Animal Control Advisory
Committee, Baytown Police Advisory Committee,
Community Library Board, Parks and Recreation Board,
and more.
