Life Insurance as 'Paycheck'
By Andrew Singer

"They want income but also the entire principal," said
Rathford. Advisors need to do a better job preparing clients
for retirement.

ou can't be a financial planner today and not
hold an insurance license, said Stephen Rathford, regional vice president with New York
Life & MainStay Investments.

Even the well-to-do will take Social Security at age 62 -
although it's much more advantageous to wait until age 66
or, even better, 70. Why do they do it? "Because it's there,"
answered Rathford.

In earlier times, insurance was more of a standalone product; today, it must be a part of every financial advisor's toolkit. It is a means of creating a guaranteed stream
of income for retirees, noted Rathford during a continuing
education session, "10 Retirement Insights from New York
Life," at the BISA Annual Convention in Hollywood, Fla.

Done right, life insurance as a supplement to Social
Security can help clients meet their basic expenses in
retirement, and it may take care of additional expenses like
cell phones, internet and country club fees. Advisors need
to be able to show their clients that insurance can be a
paycheck, said Rathford.

Clearly, an education challenge must be met. Consumers
are still woefully ignorant when it comes to insurance. Even
affluent clients may fail to understand that if they withdraw
4 percent a year from their $1 million in retirement savings,
then their principal will go down.
