TRADENEWS CALENDAR JANUARY 19-22 THE 2010 INTERNATIONAL BUILDERS’ SHOW AND NEXTBUILD Las Vegas Convention Center Las Vegas www.buildersshow.com IMI OFFERS SUSTAINABLE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM Developed by the International Masonry Institute, the Sustainable Masonry Certification Program educates union masonry contractors on the nuts-andbolts of sustainability practices and their role in the LEED certification process, making contractors a valuable part of LEED project teams. The course addresses subcontractor responsibilities from estimating and project scope to project management and documentation. It covers the LEED credits every masonry contractor should know, plus green strategies like site use and construction waste management. Contractors are tested to verify their ability to fulfill LEED responsibilities. “When masonry contractors understand how they can contribute to successful LEED projects, everybody wins,” said IMI President Joan Calambokidis. “A LEED project’s evolution from concept to reality can make a big difference in whether LEED goals are achieved.” To date, 31 contractors from Washington D.C. to Washington State have been certified, while upcoming sessions in Virginia, Ohio, California, New Jersey and Illinois are expected to educate hundreds more. Final approval of building products is always in the hands of the local regulatory agency.” ICC-ES thoroughly examined ProXHeader product information, test reports, calculations, quality control methods and other factors to ensure the product is code compliant. “We are extremely pleased to have accomplished our report with ICC,” said Todd Brady, president of Brady Construction. U.S. LABOR SECRETARY RESPONDS TO OCCUPATIONAL INJURY AND ILLNESS DECLINE The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced in October that injury and illness rates among private industry employers are down from a total case rate of 4.2 in 2007 to 3.9 in 2008. The bureau also reported a decline in non-fatal occupational injuries and illnesses from 4 million cases in 2007 to 3.7 million cases in 2008. “Preventable workplace injuries and illnesses affect millions of American workers every year, many with lifelong effects,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. “While I am cautiously optimistic that these decreases in injury and illness rates represent change in the right direction, they do not lessen the need for strong enforcement to ensure that safety is a top priority in every workplace. “To help verify the accuracy of injury and illness records, the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched a National Emphasis Program on ICC-ES ESR-1765 VERIFIES THAT PROXHEADER IS CODE-COMPLIANT Brady Construction Innovations’ ProXHeader received an evaluation report ESR-1765 from ICC Evaluation Service, providing evidence that the Engineered Header System meets IBC 2006 and CBC 2007 code requirements, the company announced in a press release. Building officials, inspectors, architects, engineers, contractors, specifiers and others utilize the ICC-ES Evaluation Reports to provide a basis for using or approving ProXHeader in construction projects following the International Building Code. | Walls & Ceilings | December 2009 http://www.buildersshow.com http://www.worldofconcrete.com http://www.ProXHeader.com http://www.nwcb.org http://www.imiweb.org http://www.awci.org http://www.cisca.org http://www.eima.com http://www.intexconstructionexpo.com
