JUST IMAGINE
THIS IS NO ORDINARY forecast issue. It's not

every day that we have the opportunity to sit
down with the visionaries who are transforming
the brands of the world's largest travel company,
Marriott International, or the design thought
leaders who are creating the "how did they do
that?" or "how did they ever get client buy-in?"
projects that telescope into the aesthetic and
operational future.
What we learned is that it's time to think
bigger than you ever have. As you'll read in "Meta
Design" (page 26), hotel giant Marriott International has moved on from basing design on what
its customers want "right now" to addressing the
underlying rationale of why they want particular
experiences-and what factors will make them
act on that. Though no hotel company is abandoning the mass market, there's a new "micro"
feel to every brand that pairs design and operations into a bespoke offer intended to be a
perfect fit for each individual guest.
Going forward, design isn't going to shine just
within the four walls of a hotel. It's going to have
to support brand-centric marketing that engages
the customer on- and off-property through apps,
events and email communication. Nor can it be
static. It used to be enough to create interiors
that would be "timeless." Now, public spaces
and guestrooms are going to have to be flexible
enough to anticipate both the style and systems
guests will want in five, 10 or even 20 years.

The work you do this year will flow from
some sweeping shifts, say the name droppable
designers who contributed to the global forecast (page 20). Biophilia, the need for balance,
the thrill of a resort where guests can ski into or
out of their guestrooms (thanks to ramps that
punctuate the architecture) are bellwethers for
the future. That's playing out at a much more
grounded level as well-whether a hotel with
both a cool face and a warm heart (page 38) or
a gym with socially responsible muscle and a
perfect silhouette (page 42).
Designers got a how-to intensive in what
they'll need to compete during the 2018
Boutique Design New York (page 12) trade fair
and conference. BDwest, set for March 13-14 in
Los Angeles, provides a Left Coast perspective
on the people, projects and products that will
shake up the new year.
