For Castle Pub, the patrons and the design are
meant to be seen; the lighting is not. Most of the
light sources are tucked away in this world inspired
by the art of tarot card reading and the nomadic life
of gypsies. According to Bella He, lighting designer
with Longyi Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd, in
Guangdong Province, looks aren't everything.
"We continually see people choose a luminaire
by its hardware design," she says. "But that's just one
factor. The designer has to evaluate how will it actually emit light into and around a space? How does it
interplay with different surfaces? These need to be
considered," she says. That's especially true for Castle
Pub. This lighting expert worked alongside multidisciplinary, Guangdong, China-based firm EdgeLab
Design's design director Wilson Huang, who relied
heavily on the use of reflection, celebrating guests'
movement and interaction as well as sending the
message that their personalities are what make the
space thrilling. As an ego check, it also forces them
to take a good hard "look in the mirror," just as a
good fortune teller might. He's layers of embedded
lighting knew their role: lift up the already highly
detailed and intricate interior scheme, maintaining
an air of mystery and escapism (the calling card of
any great nightclub).
Huang: "The most exciting element of the
project for me is the reflective ceiling. The mirrored,
stainless steel sheet reflects the whole first floor
space, which on one hand makes it feel higher. On
the other hand, the water ripple effect symbolizes a
look at the real world. A cut out of it directly above
the stage allows the second floor to look down into
the first, creating further connections, as if the
space wasn't separated by levels at all."
He: "The bar counter is the heart and soul of the
pub. The interior designer and I worked together to
make this highly visible space shine with layers of
illumination, including task lighting, accent lighting
and general lighting. He also placed a large pentagonal star on the floor. I then added RGB color
changing light strips for visual interest."
Both of these projects create lasting experiences
thanks to original design ideas that spark lightbulb
moments for patrons long after they've left. And
the glue is lighting that amps up the interiors from
a collection of FF&E to a whole other world. £
