CROSSING THE POND

While it would be unfair to say Americans don't like to
share, it would be very fair to say they're pretty leery
about sharing hotel rooms. "I feel like every American has
seen the movie 'Hostel' (a gore-centric 2005 slasher film),
and research has shown that they are wary of the term,"
says Generator ceo Alastair Thomann. There is an up-andcoming demographic that is more open to shared accommodation, he notes, but for the most part, it's a hard sell.
For a European company in the sector with American
dreams, coming stateside requires not just transferring best
practices but mastering a whole new hospitality idiom.
Okay, so Generator had already laid the groundwork
for its 2018 U.S. debut in Miami by dropping the h-word
from its company name and emphasizing its diverse
room offerings (including private rooms and longer-stay
rentals along with dorm-style rooms). "We felt that the
term 'hostel' was actually restricting us, since we've always
had a mix of both room types and guests," says Thomann.
That said, for Generator's intercontinental move, the

London-based company went much deeper than just
the renaming in its efforts to establish itself in the U.S. The
company took a long, hard look at its development
strategy and the property types it would consider. It also
doesn't hurt that Generator's parent company, Queensgate
Capital, will get more than a foothold in the U.S. lifestyle
market when it finalizes the currently-in-the-works acquisition of Sydell Group's landmark Freehand Hotels flag
(and its Broken Shaker F&B concept).
So, what will the soul-searching mean for the
upcoming Generator in Washington, D.C. (due to come
online in the first quarter of 2020) and future properties? First of all, Thomann wants you to understand that
the company is no stranger to the American guest. "They
make up 10-35% of our guests in our European properties,
so we do have an awareness of what their priorities are."
Unsurprisingly, jacking up the percentage of private rooms
is non-negotiable. So are upgrades to the F&B offers. That
means designing for venues that can work with or without
