McIlduff went the opposite way. Ovolo's lobby, which,
unlike the Moxy's, is laid out in a series of intimate-scale
vignettes, isn't the venue for in-your-face tonality. It would
just be too much in the middle of the Hong Kong bustle.
Modern riffs on floral wallpaper provide both an instant
cue that the hotel is cheekily posh (and also quirkily selfaware of the city's East-meets-West history). Punctuating
that with a gum-in-cheek portrait of Queen Elizabeth II
blowing a giant bubble underscores Ovolo's playfulness.
"We wanted to re-infuse that attitude back into Ovolo's
flagship," says McIlduff.
Moving into the guestrooms, the two designers found
common ground in the goal: finding a more serene palette
than the lobby (as usual). "Consulting on guest area design
with Baskerville's design team, we gave the 155 guestrooms
in the property a modern industrial feel, with minimal but
lush furnishings including plush leather chairs and headboards that mirror the lobby's lounge seating," says Maringola. Blue on the desk legs breaks the spell of neutrals.
McIlduff, responsible for the hotel's Gold guestrooms and
the Radio Suite, and Monique McLintock Interior, who
handled the Platinum rooms, wanted to spike up their color
wheel with warmer yellows and reds. Check out the pillow
that serves as a tiny but potent splash.
Lesson: give your vision board a discreet
smattering of color. Think about warm vs. cool tones in
the interior and exterior environments. Make sure that
your palette serves both the layout and architecture.
