toward a live music area on a small stage.
But dramatic changes-think Fragrances' entrance where
guests are guided through a telescoping tunnel, flanked on
either side by a perfumer "hall of fame" with the photograph of
each person accompanied by their iconic fragrances and the
corresponding cocktails-couldn't come with a dramatic price
tag. Marble floors were repolished, while walls and ceilings
were painted in dark colors to create a cost-effective "theater"
as well as draw the eye away from the "slightly less interesting"
existing ceiling and floor patterns, Balogh-Csapar says.
While form was of the utmost importance, function
couldn't be forgotten-especially in such active spaces
as the bars. In Fragrances, booth seating, velvet curtains
and shelving units subdivide the expanse into personalized destinations. Further, the operator requested that the
backbars could be closed to allow for other types of service.
That required some onsite F&D, especially with the Curtain
Club's wide-tiered bottle display.
"For the design story it was important to keep the bar open
for the guests to see the changes and see how the bar turns
from a day venue to a night one, but obviously the bar isn't
serving alcohol 24/7," Balogh-Csapar says. The team needed to
figure out a solution that would look appealing when closed
but could also be fully concealed when open-oh, and with the
capacity to easily move it all. A bespoke folding metal screen
that runs on concealed tracks did the trick. "Sometimes small
unnoticeable details can be of huge importance, as without
this solution the concept of a 'changing bar' couldn't have been
realized," Balogh-Csapar adds.
That's a good lesson all around: just as the bar is a-changin'
from day to night, the times they are a-changin', too. Designers,
time to take note. Well, and maybe ask for a little help from
decades past.

restaurant, celebrates the locale not only in food and drink but
also design, where brew kettles used to produce German beer
lead the narrative within the palette. Here, a new layout solved
an old issue. The previous entrance to the space was hidden
and difficult for guests to find. To remedy this, the entry was
moved to the center of the restaurant where the buffet and
show kitchen can take the stage. This rethink also made room
for overflow areas that can be opened or closed as needed.
Some old spaces also needed new life. Take, for instance,
the former business center and hotel shop. Now the Den of
Heaven, this secluded enclave takes it cue from the feather
headdresses of Germany's Golden Twenties. Floating
orchids, feather wall panels and cloud-like ceiling lights
strengthen the intention. Another influence was GermanAmerican actress and singer Marlene Dietrich's ballad in
which she sings about leaving a suitcase in Berlin.
The balancing act didn't end there. Like every city, Berlin
is made up of a diverse population. So, in the client's view, the
hotel's F&B outlets required their own (feminine and masculine) touches. Taking that into the two bars, the designers
played with color, materials and layout to meet the challenge.
In the feminine Fragrances, a palette of deep red, dark
grays and gold has been softened with the addition of warm
gray-colored seating to create a romantic and sumptuous
experience. The cut-crystal-inspired bar front, red roses,
curved velvet furniture and perfume bottles add to the femininity. In contrast, the masculine Curtain Club makes use
of dark earthy colors combined with moss green curtains.
Angular leather armchairs, a metal bar front and hard timber
flooring underscore the masculinity of the environment. Even
the seating arrangements reflect the "she or he" ambience,
with Fragrances set up with smaller chairs, deuces and booth
seating ideal for couples, and Curtain Club's seating opening
