ANOTHER INCREASE in tariffs is set to take effect this month on
$250 billion worth of goods from China. The stock market continues
to rise and fall, contingent upon scheduled U.S.-China talks. In the
shadow of this tense trade war, many sectors-not just our own-fear
another recession will hit before the end of 2020.
Despite all the above, the heads of some major hospitality
purchasing firms say today's market is still hot, not being affected too
significantly by the tariff burn. And, at least for right now, the
numbers are supporting their words. STR reports that, year over year
as of the end of August, most hotel segments from luxury to economy
have seen an increase in room construction (up 10.4%), final planning
(up 10.6%) and planning (up 5.9%).
That can make it difficult to complain. Experts told Boutique
Design they're riding the wave and preparing as best they can for if or
when it crashes (some economists and hoteliers are thinking a slowdown could come sooner rather than later). But careful financial planning and adjusting to this political climate are not the only issues
these procurement agencies are grappling with in their designer and
owner relationships. Read on to find out how the design process is
