THE DESIGN FIRM: Baranowitz + Kronenberg, Tel Aviv
THE MUSE: A new Sir family member driven
by the city's topography, as well as the legacy of

author Caterina Albert i Paradís. "Sir Victor is a
journey through emotional landscapes," says Irene
Kronenberg, head designer, Baranowitz + Kronenberg. Unable to publish her work as a female
writer, Paradís used the pseudonym Víctor Català.
To honor her legacy, interiors express femininity
through masculine representations, such as a
seemingly "soft drapery" actually made of steel.
THE MAGIC: To be "as intuitive as a smartphone," says
Kronenberg. Discoveries are easy to make around every
corner. Guests are welcomed by an open, light-filled
entrance reflective of the sun-soaked sea, then drawn
into darker, more intriguing areas with low-hanging
ceilings that allude to Mount Sant Llorenç. Multiple
seating vignettes packed with comfy sofas and lounges,
a pool table, and the Alchemist bar nestled toward the

THE MAVERICK MOVE: Odes to Paradís include a
multifunctional library dedicated to her works, and
metal dots that cover the walls and ceilings allude
to the beads of a necklace she wore.

off-guard keep them engaged and asking the allimportant question of: "How'd they do that?" An
optical illusion of a mirror image behind a "portal"
set right next to the elevator bank injects an
element of excitement before guests head up to
their rooms for more thrills.

FINALIST

THE MUSE: A lobby that rests (easily) on its brand's
name with pieces seemingly plucked from one's
subconscious fantasies. Faded oriental rugs adorn
black and white checkered tile flooring, and plush
velvets in rich colors rest atop worn leather couches.
A glowing burnt orange reception desk helps illuminate the space, while a David LaChapelle photograph behind it reflects the palette of the public area.

buildings on either side: one being the former
hotel Utopia and the other, the Embers building,
where a brothel called the Climax Saloon lived. The
signs for both of the aforementioned were cleaned,
preserved, then returned to their original locations.
THE MESSAGE: Elements that catch a guest
THE MUSE: Easy livin'. Public spaces are
comprised of intimate nooks that are more residentially-scaled enclaves. A minimalist check-in
experience gives way to a living-room area that
mimics the guestrooms above with its curated mix
of custom and vintage furniture. A bar featuring
a terracotta brick face anchors the lobby, both
leading out through retractable glass doors to the
restaurant. Guests dine on an open patio where
midcentury modern influences abound in the
seating options.
THE MAGIC: All public areas flow seamlessly into
one another thanks to a lack of clear boundaries
but all tie together by oak-clad walls, ceilings and
the backdrop of the Pacific.

mix of found objects and warm materials can drive
the "make yourself at home" message. Guests are
surrounded by shelves of perfectly placed mugs,
perfumes, books, tote bags, lighting of a warm
yellow glow and a record player.
