The Highlights: Every aspect of the
resort's setting is echoed in the lobby's
design, which was refreshed as part
of a multimillion-dollar renovation of
the renowned, formerly independent
358-key Bacara Resort now flagged as a
Ritz-Carlton. Nature-inspired accents,
the brand's signature oceanic blue
tones, opalescent surfaces, and woven
textures pay tribute to the area's original
residents. Old World elements combined
with a relaxed, Spanish Mission vibe echo
the Mediterranean styling of buildings
throughout Santa Barbara. Handcarved
Italian stone reception desks are a tangible
link to another continent and the forms of
the surrounding landscape, while organic
influences form a direct connection with
the coastal landscape.

" Our goal was for the property to look toward the future without forgetting the inspiration
of the past and to infuse glamour and luxury into the design, creating an oasis on the Santa
Barbara coast, " says Kathleen Dauber, partner at HBA.

The Highlights: Design plays the long game at the
Austin Proper Hotel. Kelly Wearstler's creative
direction unfolded over three years to today's
layered, individualistic look that mines a tradition
of artistry and craftsmanship distinct to the city.
The historical influence of Austin's most
stately homes inspires eye-catching details,
including a sculptural staircase installation of
patchworked vintage rugs. Local artists and
materials are featured prominently throughout,
with every surface adding textural interest: pots,
trays, and cabinet inlay tiles by ceramicist Rick
Van Dyke; photography by Austin's Barry Stone;
custom millwork cypress shou sugi ban paneling;
and antique mirror finishes.

The Highlights: Designers faced two
challenges at this beloved resort. First, how
to tackle the massive renovation? Second,
what's the best way to spotlight and embrace
local culture to create an authentic and
contemporary experience? The answer: Give
it some soul. At the heart of the public space
is a loggia around which the program unfolds.
There, a centuries-old canoe, a remnant of the
property's previous life, highlights the base of
the central stair. In the multistory atrium, the
design team crafted a central hale structure,
added murals by local artists, and created
seating zones to control circulation.
